bg3 is REALLY good, so much shit you can do, tons of reactivity and dialogue depending on race/class and even some stuff that's specific to your subclass (berserker barbarian has lots of fun "i will eat your face off" type stuff)
i could autismdump about that game for 30 straight hours

you can either make your own wizard (or your own dark urge wizard for evilmoding) or play gale, who you normally find as a companion but you can choose as your player avatar at game start instead if you so desire
wizards are very, very good, you can blow up lots of stuff and have a giant army of undead, or be a bladesinger and channel the powers of god and anime

BG3 is good but it has much more of an immersive sim angle to it than classic BG.

If you want something more like classic BG I would recommend the Pillars of Eternity games. First one feels more like D&D and the second game is more of its own thing.

Also it has both an elf wizard twink and a fighter hunk played by Matthew Mercer.
