>>42555158they have a lot of what ppl would call gatekeeping. you can change your legal documents like your ID and hukou registration after getting SRS, which is not covered by the national health plans (they are broken up into basically 2 different programs but that’s not really important). HRT is covered but you need a diagnosis from a psychologist. they relax a lot of policies. used to be you had to get approval from your family even if you were an adult, now you only need to notify them. a portion of the psychological assessment is focused on family interviews to determine how long you have been gender nonconforming because a lot of people lie about their history to gain access. if you are too old you can be denied help too. it means that basically unless you were gender nonconforming at a young age (like before 16) you can maybe get HRT and surgery when you are in your early 20s. it also means that most of the trans people are heterosexual so you will only really see trans women married to men. some of the anti corruption stuff does focus on the looser restrictions on trans ppl, because some doctors can be paid to forge surgery certificates, expedite you, forge your family history, etc. socially the hurdle is your family because it’s very different socially there. if your family is ok with you transitioning then everyone else is obliged to respect your transition. if they don’t then you are kind of screwed, and will always be an outsider and struggle even if you move. school is also a big problem because it’s very hard to get your school records updated with a new name and gender because their systems just dont work retroactively like that. you are expected to out yourself constantly but it raises a lot of suspicion because people typically think you are committing fraud, they don’t think you are transgender.
