have you ever taken a scenic train excursion before where the purpose of the train was not to get somewhere but just to sightsee?

>>
>>42674184
thanks, the train is 4~ hrs and I don't want to say which river its along but its in america and deep in the country
ive never done an overnight train
i did a long train to canada as a teen but that was just in regular seats

I guess that would be an interesting idea to bring back sleeper trains just for sightseeing
>>
>>42674184
Me too. I wish we could have more cozy OPs like this.

>interesting idea
the problem is absurd cost conpared to bus, car, plane...
it just doesnt make sense if the paasenger count and frequency dont align...
its like ship cruises, there is a ship cruise to norway i may have been on, hello coop. it has 5000 paasenger and still cabin cost is like 400 minimum
>>
>>42674285
its already 100 dollars for most of the scenic trains
I took a 20 dollar scenic train and it was a bad time - way too crowded - awful seats, train barely updated since 1910
>the problem is absurd cost conpared to bus, car, plane...
it would provide a unique experience in a unique location america has a lot of interesting river valleys and gorges
norway is a ripoff country

>in America
>therefore Amtrak
oh no...

Ok the first thing you have to do is lower your expectations of service. And maintenance. And schedules.

If I try to explain, someone will just call me racist.

Amtrak has different models in use, so know which model you will be in, its sort of a trick to find. Do your research, read reviews. There are numerous channels on youtube that will give you lots of insights. There are tricks to getting cheaper sleeper rooms, but they are overpriced.

Maintenance can be scant, service can be huffy, negligent and minimal effort. A lot of people find the "roomettes" to be a better deal. The sleepers give a bit more room and a shower but often the showers are not maintained. Sometimes the toilets don't work. So many prefer the roomette and just use the surprisingly under-used economy showers (not used=fairly clean). Know if your route has a viewing deck and dining car. Know if you get a lounge at your station and how long stops are. And make sure your route is train only. If you are not careful when booking, Amtrak will try to slip in bus segments. Research your route on youtube.

Train rides, even some of the western routes on Amtrak, are beautiful things, but in the US you have to treat them like military missions and negotiate the deal like a divorce lawyer. Some routes are for viewing, but many are not. Remember that some lines run over ancient rail lines and can be bumpy for sleep.

But please, please, please do your research on youtube first. There are plenty of good review channels.

I'm talking about private rail operators who run scenic day trains
there's a lot of different little ones all over
I think it's actually even more popular than it used to be and they added more winter/off-season trains than their used to be
>Maintenance can be scant,
I asked if they had any inspections from their inception ~ 1880 to when they closed ~ 1970, nope, the government never looked at the rails to make sure they were safe
I guess I didn't ask if they had accidents
>>
>>42674452
Also, regarding which model of sleeper/roomettes:

Older roomettes have a toilet right in the roomette. Newer ones don't. Some prefer the toilet, many don't. But if you don't have a toilet in the room, be sure to scout a path to one before settling in.

A roomette may not be necessary for one day rides. The economy chairs are usually well liked, but you have to share space with potentially loud people.

If the point is sight seeing, then you have to pick and plan that way; season, route, travel time of year etc. People who travel in groups have found its a better deal to get two roomettes opposite of each other because its a better deal, more room, and you never have to worry about the "good view" being on the other side of the train.

>I'm talking about private rail operators who run scenic day trains
Oh well thats an entirely different matter. I don't know whats available for you where you are looking, but I am sure it should be better than Amtrak. Probably pricier per mile though. I hope you find something choice, I am sure you will find something great if its not Amtrak. Its not that all Amtrak is bad, its just really hit-and-miss and you have to know what you are getting into. With private trains, you should get better quality by far. The only downside is it wont take you as far. Sometimes thats a good thing. I have no idea what their sleepers are like. Probably pretty good.
>>
>>42674581
>With private trains, you should get better quality by far.
varies widely some operators care more than others
>The only downside is it wont take you as far.
these are just out and back excursions through places that cannot be accessed by road
boomers love it, but its a nice way to break up a trip, and im recovering from an injury and its still winter so outdoor stuff is still iffy
>I have no idea what their sleepers are like. Probably pretty good.
day trains
they do have cabooses you can rent and they will drop you off at the river and come pick you up the next day but that's pricy (i think its like 300 a night)
they also have cabooses that have been turned into cheap hotel rooms I've seen both next to train stations and just randomly lining the road in tourist areas
my great grandpa was a rail worker but we don't know exactly what he did

>>42674126
Ya when in Schweiz once they have these trains with huge windows
>>
>>42674648
these are just normal windows
:(
the best trains are open air but those rides don't start until May
they have two separate ones now, one along a river, one up a mountain

I rode a scenic train last fall and they told us there used to be an open air car but it broke and they never fixed it
>>

>>
>>42674663
No like I rode normal carts as well but these were called panoramic trains iirc. I really wanna ride those old fashioned looking ones I think they had those as well they're a bit pricy tho
What does open air mean?
>>
>>42674710
open air means there's no exterior walls on the train you sit exposed to the air/wind
>I really wanna ride those old fashioned looking ones
usually open air and old fashioned go together, old fashioned being not only that the trains are usually deadstock (old trains from the original logging boom era of 1900ish), but the trains are powered by coal engines
>>
>>42674648
valentine's day was yesterday

Its sounds really nice. I would be picky though. I guess it depends on when you are going and where you are. Naturally you want to match it to seasonal weather in your climate. Perhaps you get to enjoy winter for another month, or perhaps spring comes early for you. But I would want it to be firmly in one season or another, not the "bleh" in between.

It sounds wonderful though, and it has to be easier than the Amtrak planning I mentioned earlier. I really hope you find your choice route. I don't know what your time frame is. If I were to book a private one, my first choice would probably be New England in late September. I am sure the west coast has plenty. I dont know when the southeast is good for train rides. Early spring, I would imagine. You know how the south is in the summer with their Jurassic Park type bugs and whatnot.

>>42674648
They have wonderful trains in Europe for private tours but they are bloody expensive. They sort of have to be as a price barrier.
>>
>>42674876
>Open air would make me feel like cattle
Its not like that, sort of like a trolly car. I don't think they go fast enough to muss your hair.
>>
>>42674876
>Open air would make me feel like cattle
it actually wasn't that bad they didn't put too many people on the train although the last open air one I took was during COVID so maybe its a bit worse now

a lot of scenic trains kinda go nowhere and are more geared for little kids and old people finding ones where the train sees something cool is a bit hard and you do have to research it some trains are scammier than others

>Naturally you want to match it to seasonal weather in your climate.
yup you won't get green up on the mountains for your views until may but they don't run trains before then anyways
october is usually peak scenic train month most places for leaves

tour trains are popular in Europe & japan although the ones with sleeping carriages are even more expensive than usual generally its more about getting to ride a historic train or a train with a fun gimmick

Japan has some crazy fancy sleeper trains (and a lot of sleeper buses too). I'm sadly stuck driving myself most places.
>>
>>42675315
Thats interesting, since their trains are so fast that you wouldn't have much time to sleep. I wonder if they are priced to market. I guess they would have to be. It must be a real luxury there.

They really do have an incredible culture. I think I will link a youtube channel I like that shows zoo tours there. I haven't watched it in a while but the person makes great videos, informative too.

https://www.youtube.com/@JapanAnimalTravels/videos
>>
>>42675389
I think they have some normal priced sleepers but there's also some meme videos on youtube about expensive luxury sleeper trains, I guess none of them are bullet trains

japan is weird, I would never visit they are too authoritarian and restrictive, not that America isn't, but America doesn't hide it quite so much under a saccharine cutesy veneer that makes it extra disturbing

I watch solotraveljapan
he mostly does ferries, but maybe ferries are also a winter thing, i swear he did more trains in the warmer months

it's a shame about their regular sleeper trains thought. places like China & Austria have choice between night & day but in japan they only seem to care about the fast day trains. although there's a new one coming to JR East un 2027
>>
>>42675432
seems like there's a decent selection of sleeper trains in Japan? But I only know this from watching youtube and it has been a while since he's done one of those not sure why.

not in terms of regular sleeper trains like you have in China, India & Europe. Japan has almost none in comparison.

quite strange considering it would be quite good for cities with no shinkansen line.
>>

Ferries are nice. I don't know why I like them, but I do. Maybe just because its seeing the water on the way to somewhere else.
