You bloody bastard. Brothers Karamazov is the best book I've ever read. Anna Karenina is actually the only Tolstoy I've ever read and, while it was entertaining, it didn't capture me like Brothers Karamazov did. I think mostly because Anna Karenina was such an unsympathetic character in a fairly unrelatable way to me. Meanwhile Karamazov had characters that felt so alive that I've literally never felt so immersed into a story since. I actually didn't even know the religious significance of the book when I first read it and took away an entirely different experience than was probably meant. Beautiful book, vivid and grand.

Anna Karenina felt like more of a soap opera in a way. It was very posh and pretty, with fancy ideas and delicate break downs. Karamazov felt more real to me because I have spent my entire life in poverty where the dramatic, neurotic and vibrant expressions are simply more relatable. I enjoyed Levin's perspective in Anna Karenina as it had the same energy as Robinson Cruesoe in a way and generally seemed more endearing and fun to read. Anna herself, at best, reminded me of some of a lot of women I know but not in a very convincing way imo. The guy she eloped with was more tragic and barely a character to me simultaneously. I'd probably have to re-read it to see if I can appreciate it more today.
