Socially transitioning without passing is a very recent phenomenon, and I suspect it’s only done as an emulation of what trans women did in the past (i.e. when passability was a significant factor in gatekeeping medical transition), maybe it does help some people but I suspect most only do it because they think they’re supposed to.
