There’s a 6-3 conservative super majority they’ve been building to for years. Mitch McConnell managed to block Obama nominating Merrick Garland on the basis that the opening happened at the end of his term. Trump was then able to fill that seat early in his first term. The Republicans in the senate then forced through Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination at the end of Trump’s first term, despite this going against the argument they made for delaying Garland’s confirmation.

They have a super majority because they’ve been willing to play hardball to get it. Most of the conservative justices are partisan hacks, so they’ve been all too willing to take cases and make rulings that favor their ideological goals even when the underlying jurisprudence is thin. They’re trying to take advantage of their super majority to ram through as many of their pet projects while they can.
