For the record: I have no fucking idea as to what I’m talking about. I know next to nothing about biology and think this is too contentious a topic to ask anywhere and not get extrodinarily biased answers.

My understanding of modern genetics is that we are born with certain genes but how they then express themselves is incredibly dependent on environmental factors, much more so than the scientific community used to believe.

What if we as humanity do as a whole have the capacity to be queer on a much larger scale than previously believed but that those genes were previously unable to express themselves for whatever reason (idfk I dialed out of grad school for a reason)

I don’t see how we could reasonably quantify this but I’m basically asking how much of the uptick in queerness among Gen Z is being influenced by the relatively positive reception to queerness?

There’s gotta be a couple of you terminally online folks who also have degrees in bio chem and can explain this to me

Subject feild was too long so had to shorten

"Environmental factors" doesn't mean "societal". All of us already have at least 99% of the necessary genes for both male and female development, so it's no surprise that genetics doesn't have much of a direct effect. It's about hormones (and possibly endocrine disruptors) and the effects they have on epigenetics and development.

Can you break down those big words for someone who skipped HS bio?

and I'm not sure how you expect me to explain the technical details of what non-societal environmental factors there are and how they work without using technical vocabulary. It seems like your main issue is the common misconception that "genetics" somehow explains all of biology, and getting over that is all you really need to do. If you want to know how actual biology works, then just learn it? I've done my best to explain it to you already, but I can't understand it for you.

yes the vast majority of people don’t have a “self” or a “inner identity” they just do what sounds fun and is socially acceptable. If you remove the social stigma around queerness it will seem obviously more appealing than the insanity that is straight relationships, that’s why the stigma and hate is necessary for a functioning society
