Nta, I'm a cis guy, but while this can be done over time, we're attatched to the version of gender we have in our minds. You can't just redefine someone into being a woman and expect that not to feel like a cop out. Hence why people need to transition for them to feel comfortable.

If we had a guy from a long time ago when gender norms around masculinity were different, he'd have no issues with wearing dresses or high heels or make up personally. To him, these things were never specifically feminine. But we are not him today. We have to carry the burdens of our kind of masculinity until the day we die, just as he did.
