feds infiltrated the LGBT community so effectively that post-2016 optics reversed in like 5 years. all it took was a few scary sneedhons in the spotight claiming to represent the community. even some formed allies folded at the insanity and purity testing that became so common
>>
ultimately the real problem was abandoning the transsexual label and making transgender into an umbrella term

in practice, optics nukes aren't the problem. The effect of stuff like "it's maam" is mostly confined to the internet and television
the actual problem is when legal cases happen involving banning medical care or removing protections, and the pro-trans lawyers arguments fail because they can't define transgender status or gender identity as an innate characteristic.
One of the best arguments for gay rights decades ago was that even if you don't agree with gay people's lifestyles, gay people are born gay and can't not be gay. So even if you don't like gay people, the existence of gay people is undeniable, and some kind of compromise on rights has to happen. Being transgender is currently considered a social identity, not an innate characteristic. So long as anyone can be trans it means that accepting the existence of trans people can come down to an opinion. If being trans is a social identity then the people who don't like trans people can categorically deny the existence of trans people and there's no need for a compromise because if the social conditions that allow for the existence of trans people were changed, trans people would in their opinion stop existing. Unfortunately, many people in progressive and trans communities also believe this, only they phrase it as gender abolitionism. As in, if gender roles were abolished there would be no need to transition. So long as actual trans people (transsexuals) are represented by gender abolitionists and cissexuals with trans social identities, we will continue to lose rights.
