There have been dumb bots active since like, 2012. It's just in the last 5 years they got way smarter and the public got access to stuff that wasn't super basic. If you want a truly bot free internet you need to go back to the 2000s.

(that said I hate how much AI has fucking exploded and how much tricking people into training it and letting it scrape all content online has been normalized. If neither of those were a thing and were illegal we probably wouldn't even be at late 2022 levels of AI yet. Like imagine if every piece of data fed to them had to be approved and paid for and every piece of training was done by paid employees and not by randoms online or employees with keystrokes tracked? This wouldn't be going so crazy)

This. The tech was gonna happen eventually anyway, but it's only progressing as fast as it is because of massive data theft and scraping combined with them not needing to actually run a profit because speculators are just pouring money in.

Get rid of all of that and it would be a far far slower moving industry that probably wouldn't get to where it is today until the mid-late 2030s
