I think most of it comes from people genuinely deluding themselves because of social contagion. None of it has any scientific backing, it comes from chronically online spaces.
Plurality is seen as "friends in your head," which is not at all how DID or OSDD works. It's like misinterpreting IFS. The alters from DID aren't "different people" yet plurality romanticizes it as "headmates" and having a mythical "headspace." DID comes from extreme trauma during childhood, and yet there are "endogenic" systems that don't experience any trauma. DID splits come from traumatic events and are on the order of weeks to months to years, it's different than switching a username in a discord server. Look at pluralpedia dot org or the systemscringe subreddit if you want to hatescroll I guess.

Plural people are probably mentally ill and struggle with real dissociation and identity fragmentation issues. It's not healthy to encourage splitting yourself into "multiple people," and so much of the community is an echo chamber of self diagnoses.
But like just let them be. They're usually good people and are usually just really hurt and are using a maladaptive coping mechanism to get through their day.

DID exists and it's terrifying when you encounter it in the real world. The online larpers are giving it a bad name and I feel bad for people who actually have it because they're generally severely traumatized.

it's literally just not real
DID is probably real, but the idea of having "multiple personalities" is not real, at most it's a delusion brought about by serious trauma and debilitating mental illness. You can tell if you meet someone who actually has DID, because they have a serious mental illness instead of talking about their "alters"
anyone who talks about being plural or having alters or whatever else is 100% faking it.

"I" have been told its a trauma induced delusion brought on by chronic dissociation.
We don't particularily care to argue a state of how we exist and its validity to random people.
See it as a larp, see it as whatever.
But know we rarely tell people in person, and work incredibly hard to come across as normal to real people.
