In the second film the orc logistics officer complains to SAUROman that there isnt enough fuel for the furnaces to make the weapons, so sauroman gives the order to burn the forest. But this isnt how you make fuel. You have to cut the trees and then burn the wood in an environment with no oxygen so that the wood can turn into coal that can then be used as fuel. Burning the forest would leave them with just cinders and ashes.
