The conflation between LLM transformers and AI is a pet peeve. I would say in general a lot of the underlying anxieties of "AI" are not really different from how computer systems were once spoken of. I think the difference now is how the politics have changed, or perhaps how some of these sentiments lay dormant in people who had no reason to be against computer systems (and were politically opposed to those who were). There is a reasonable leftist argument to make against government subsidy of data centers as they represent a bubble which too much of the economy is propped up on. There is also the concern that the real function of this technology and infrastructure would be mass surveillance. However most of the anti AI positions are nonsensical and based more on interpersonal consensus than thinking things through.

I've used LLMs a bit and found it helpful to motivate me to get started on certain technical things. However it very much feels like a gimmick, it has very rudimentary writing ability and I've stopped using it because I'm worried it's unvaried prose will rub off on me. It's not very good at the things I had previously used search engines for, such as finding exact quotes, and I feel it only has appeal to laymen of a given field.

imo, at a bare minimum, AI data center construction should be halted, it should be illegal to fire somebody and replace them with AI, the development & release of generative AI models should be very tightly regulated, it should be illegal to force an employee to use AI, creative works (movies, games, music etc) made with AI should be boycotted by reviewers and be ineligible for any awards, use of AI should be banned in a lot of sectors such as healthcare, law, government, it should be illegal to use AI-generated content in marketing or political campaigns, and social media algorithms should deprioritize AI-generated content

Anyone still clinging to accelerationism in the current year is a filtered retard. LLMs are a mirror of lowest common denominator retard culture and not particularly useful to anyone with any form of mastery in any field. It might be useful in pacifying retards with slop and a clerical productivity boost. "AI" in general is probably quite useful for scientific purposes which will eventually filter down to benefit normgroids.

It's one of the more blatant cases of braindead culture war bullshit coming from westurds, it's here to stay just like the internet, and the panic about it in the 90s and 00s. The main problem is that governments will use it to kill you, civilians kvetching about the average joe genning some anime girl aren't going to stop the bad people using it. It's absolutely fucking magic that I can type words and a robot makes a picture for me. It's like a dream come true.
I'm a musician, so I haven't played around a lot with the music making robots, but when I have, it's pretty amazing. I'd use it to make drum tracks for guitar/piano pieces I've made, but I don't really record anymore.
The AI assisted tools in Photoshop are fucking amazing. Shit that used to take me 20-30mins to do, it does in seconds now. The Remove Tool is a revelation.

AI is under-deployed relative to what it's already capable of, and increases in capability exponentially every few months. It's going to disrupt many industries. There will start to be fewer jobs that pay less and are even more nepotistic. It will be and already is used to surveil you, generate false consensus reality, and create fake videos/images/audio/people/events to manipulate you. Agentic AI with document driven development can do most peoples jobs better than them already, overnight while they sleep. Eventually frontier models will start charging more and then it will create a permanent class division of people who can afford AI and those who can't. Invest in the data center build out.
