Asexuality is a very real disease, I helped someone close to me through it and learned a lot along the way. The attempts to treat it as a legitimate sexuality only make it worse, it's a disease of gaslighting.

In my experience, it's an outcome of Christian trauma in childhood. I'm sure there are other causes. You tell a bunch of kids that sexual thoughts are from the devil and every so often one of them actually believes it into adulthood. They'll insist that they simply don't have those thoughts. They'll keep insisting it until even they start to believe it, living in a constant cloud of gaslighting. "I'm not attracted to that person sexually, I just like them aesthetically." "It's not a sexual fantasy, it's a romantic one." "I just like the friendship and ego-boost of flirting, but it's not like I want to sleep with anyone."

For the person I knew, she didn't make any progress on it at all until I was able to prove, demonstrably, that she was lying by compiling chatlogs, anecdotes, and photos across a decade, proving that, for an asexual, all those thousands and thousands of sexual comments really didn't make sense. If anything, she was excessively sexual compared to anyone else in our shared social circles. She'd always try to say it was a joke or just a bit of worldbuilding, it was extremely difficult to prove it to her satisfaction. Self-gaslighting is the most powerful force I've ever encountered. Of course, she also had a circle of enablers.

Once she finally saw it for what it was, the illusion dropped pretty fast and she was *much* happier for it. She'd been coping with several hours a day of smut (mostly ao3 and bioware games) and living a half-life. I'd say it was a happy ending, but she died about a year later for entirely unrelated reasons. I'd like to think that she at least enjoyed a few months of living a full life.
