we live in an age where a deluge of information is accessible from basically anywhere, while the skills required to parse and weigh info against personal experiences are rapidly declining. this goes for both sides of the political aisle, regarding the issues that pertain to this board.i'll share a personal experience: when i was 19, my father (very conservative, works 70+ hours to sustain the family, wants the best for me) unfortunately found out i was a faggot. it was not pretty. probably the most hysterical and angry i've ever seen a human being. and then when it was all over and i went to bed, i actually printed a document saying basically:>"hey sorry about that, i already have a poor return-on-investment, let's nip this shit in the bud. get the ithaca 37 out of the garage and finish me off, there's a 2 buckshot shells just in case. i fully authorize this, don't feel bad."and i wasn't trying to manipulate him, i did feel as if that was a fair solution at the time (and still do 2 years later). he was quiet for a few days, told me he loved me once, and we haven't spoken about it since.while i'm sure many of you may view that as a good thing, it sets a dangerous precedent. to me, being wrong on an issue is fine as long as you're firm on it. there is no point in thinking about issues and having an opinion on them if it's tenuous with the ability to be warped overnight. like just because i'm his son (who never even wanted to spend time with him while he was asking me to as a child) doesn't mean i'm some holy epiphany. complete chock full of shit. idk

Basically I am forced to conclude that adults as I read about them in history books are a very rare thing now. Now most people don't grow into adults, they grow into gossipy children who absolutely rely on the herd to inform their opinions. To me, the most disturbing implication of this is that democracy is doomed. I've read about people that I believe can form a functioning democracy but the average person I meet now is someone who would vote hitler into power.I'm a person who believes it's a matter of morality that democracy be the ruling system of government and I just don't think it's going to survive for much longer. It's just SO EASY to turn the voting public into uselessly ignorant people.
