I miss when transgenderism was just a shameful thought I had inside my head, instead of the inescapable talking point it is today.
>>
>>44262870
Because you're a typical straight male with a straight man's mentality you never went through a gay phase which was common to transgender women back when I transitioned all of us had a gay phase
>>
>>44262899
I wanted to lose my virginity to a guy my entire life and I did. What are you talking about
>>
>>44262508
Early 2000s here. It was very different.

Being trans was a thing you mostly did quietly, DIY resources weren't easy to find and weren't consistently good quality.

Doing it by the books had gatekeeping, but the path was pretty clear. When I transitioned it was a year of therapy before HRT, a year of HRT before any surgeries, and you needed SRS to change most ID documents, as well as letters from 2 providers with a psych evaluation. I was after the days when you had anything like RLE before HRT or mandatory male attraction.

It was good, though. The process didn't bother me, I felt sure about everything I was doing, and I got to go pretty young (21). Transition as a minor was rare and required full parental support and a lot of effort.

This is really interesting nona.
>>
You could pass just by wearing make up and having long hair.

Feminine=woman, and this was in Britain. Gay dudes got tons of shit, no one knew what a tranny was except for flamboyant drag queens on the telly.

Oh and there was even a trans woman on the most popular British soap, Coronation Street. Millions of people saw a trans woman in a loving relationship with a cis man, every night... and no one cared. Now the media would dox the actress, the government would pull the show from air, and parliament would pass laws saying all trans people must be imprisoned immediately.

Some things are better now though
>>
>>44263655
For me it's all worse now. I passed pretty well, but today, people can tell. When they can tell, it feels like being exposed to the rough parts of being male, which is getting beat up by men cuz I don't have the protection of being considered a woman. I believe most of us transitioned for social reasons back then.
>>
>>44263776
I mean better in terms of DIY. I can order hrt direct from china. No internet when i grew up. The medical side can be controlled by the individual now, which is huge.

Socially, yeah, i cant dispute you. Passing now requires effort, before it was chill. Cis women getting attacked now, things are hyper bad on the social side. I see it getting worse.
>>
>>44263776
It's definitely worse now. I haven't been clocked yet to my face (stealth at work and my town) but I worry about it in ways I never did before.

Also helping my gf go through legal document changes, and while the surgery requirements are gone the process is so much more cumbersome than when I did it. It's probably gonna take her close to a year, all told, to do everything that took me a couple months.
>>
>>44263776
> most of us transitioned for social reasons back then.

I mean... no, not at all? For me and every other trans woman I knew it was crippling dysphoria, besides whether or not we liked guys.
>>
>>44263903
I transition long ago. I won't tell you how long because you think I'm so old. most transgender women i knew only transitioned for social reasons, it was like you didn't think you looked masculine enough to be a gay guy, so you transition anx became an asexual woman for all practical purposes
>>
>>44263888
I did not have to wait a year before taking HRT I was giving it immediately in San Francisco. Now I should have stayed gay boy because I don't have the protection of being seen as a female by everyone in society anymore so I'm always afraid now. Didn't transition for sexual reasons only for social protection
>>
>>44264193
I mean, if you think being a woman includes "social protection," we've obviously had pretty different experiences as women in major cities. I've been attacked several times in my life and it sure wasn't because I was being read as a man.

Women are not particularly privileged in terms of safety in my experience. And the idea of becoming an "asexual woman for all practical purposes" doesn't match my experience at all. The vast majority of dolls I came up with, including myself, married cis men or wanted to, or were fun party girls, not people identifying as failed males.

I transitioned because my body was wrong. If I wanted to be a man but sucked at it, I'd have just tried harder.

My university is clogged with them. They have messed up the women's bathrooms and left the toilet seats up and trashed them. It is so bad that there are fucking posters put up. They were in this group of 6-foot bio men wanting to be women blocking the elevators and all the girls had to squeeze past them. It was very creepy, especially since I am 5'3 and lots of the international students are even shorter and in an unfamiliar environment. I always think, what about the muslim girls who need to change their hijabs, need safe spaces, etc. How is it equitable if they are thrown under the bus for some man's validation? It isn't truly multicultural if you prioritise that over someone's background and culture
>>
>>44269509
>>My university is clogged with them. They have messed up the women's bathrooms and left the toilet seats up and trashed them.
not to put this on you specifically, but last time i had to clean womens toilets for a living the absolute creatures that used them would leave used sanitary pads in the open and smeared faeces on the seats. meanwhile the mens was always clean save for the unfortunate stench of piss.
>>
>>44269526
Lucky you! They leave both seats up piss on there and paper on the floor. You can tell a man was there. That specifically is a male issue and clearly them.

The ones that don't have both seats up are fairly clean unless there is a drop of piss on there. My highschool toilets were usually very clean apart from the odd bloody toilet with period blood unflushed. Tbhq, I felt bad for them because it was clearly young girls who didn't know what to do or nasty periods. Totally get it. Men leaving the seats up even though they are supposed to be "dysphoric" and "insecure in need of validation" doing the most masculine thing ever, not as much sympathy for that. Maybe as much as the family friend male guest in the house who left his undies on the floor of the bathroom

I mean I've seen some twinkhons around the unis but I don't go to one so I couldn't tell you what it's like there. of those I've seen they were either in cis girl friend groups or pairs of two. besides that I guess they're all either moders or passoids

My reasons for wanting to be a woman seems simple and right for me. I was always the dumbest kid in school held back in classes and have a low IQ I am not very good at my own Survival and I always thought having a strong more masculine partner would help me.
I've never been attracted to women and used to like the looks of girls but when they went to puberty, I lost my interest. I've never been really such attracted that much to anyone.
As a woman it's easier to fake sexual attraction and please the lover. Besides I need somebody who's strong for me in life

how did you dress

how did your family take it
>>
>>44278640
Oh I'm FTM. probably relevant to you.

>how was getting on hrt for you and your friends
I didn't. I didn't know anyone with extra T who was willing to take the risk. if my family had indicated they were the least bit supportive I'd have begged them, but they were not. I was outed at 16 and my life became hell. I instead prepared to start the moment I turned 18. I started the day after my birthday.

any kind of medical transition was tricky back then. There was practically no trans care on health insurance. You could be kicked off insurance for "preexisting conditions," meaning basically anything including being trans. You were kicked off your parents' insurance at 18. The medical gatekeeping officially barred anyone the least bit gender nonconforming, gay, nonbinary, autistic, or with mental health issues. You needed years of therapy notes and a "real life test" to start. Then you'd have to live near a rare trans clinic or endo who could prescribe.

Also, there were no workplace protections and many parents would throw you out if they knew. This meant a lot of people doing sex work (including living with shitty older partners basically acting as sugar daddies) and getting fired repeatedly from shitty service jobs, saving for years to pay for transition.

DIY has definitely always been a thing for MTF HRT. When I was out, it was similar to now--often ordering off the internet.

Jennifer Diane Reitz is fucking insane and can be quite judgmental and abrasive, but I think her website is an excellent time capsule for some earlier days of transness.

It's also fiction, but I would suggest watching Pose, also. as someone who was out in a heavily black and brown trans social setting back then.
>>
>>44278898
very interesting, thank you
>>
>how easy was passing
I would say it was easier than now because cis people were oblivious and most of them didn't know any out trans people. you were courting a lot more violence if you were clocked though.

I had about a 50/50 pass rate before I started HRT. Being black helped, lol.

>how did you dress
Like a little emo kid I guess. I would have been considered an Ayden or whatever if this community had been around back then. People constantly called me a dyke.

>who did you socialize with
I lost all my friends at the end of elementary school, when it became more obvious something was different about me. I was isolated and harshly bullied to the point that i decided coming out couldn't be much worse, so I came out everywhere but home when I got to high school.

I had friends in high school but many of them treated me a bit like a joke, even if not in a malicious way. It was difficult to feel close to them. I had a partner for two years. It was a very unhealthy relationship even for a couple of teens. We made up many years later.

I snuck over to the queer community center across the street a lot and ended up secretly volunteering over there. I came out freakishly young even for the 00s, so everyone was older than me and protective. I kept them at arms length emotionally and almost never integrated my work life with the rest of my life, as I planned on never coming out at home. Still, I was involved in volunteer work like that for years. I taught workshops, helped other people start GSAs, and campaigned for rights legislation. So even if I didn't feel like I was making normal friendships, I knew a lot of queer + trans people.

>the life of a 1967 femboy
>>
>how did your family take it
I was outed to my family at 16. My mom threatened to kick me out, then started basically doing at-home conversion therapy on me every day at the same time. Mentally breaking me down, interrogating me, threatening. Broke into and threw out my stuff, called my teachers and therapist, vowed to never let me transition. I tried to kill myself after about a month of this and failed. After that she eased up more and more. When she saw I would clearly pass and other people didn't blame her, she made a complete 180 and became unrecognizable. She didn't remember any of that stuff by the time that she died.

My dad just stopped calling.

My grandparents were the only people who were immediately and unconditionally supportive. My grandfather said, "Okay, so what should I call you?" and then basically nailed the pronouns from then on. Told me I would make a very fine young man, etc. He wrote me a letter for after he died. Related his philosophy career to his thoughts on transness and dying. I think that saved me from being permanently and extremely distrustful of everyone.

>This was better, BTW
I sure don't think so. First of all, we (including myself here as gay and gender nonconforming) transitioned anyway. We coached each other on getting through the hoops. Genderqueer/nonbinary people microdosed themselves, etc.

Secondly, it's demonstrably a failure to ascertain who was really trans and who wasn't. Every single nonbinary friend, gay trans friend, butch trans woman, femme trans man, that I knew from back then stayed on their hormones, stayed themselves, and was happier for it.

Thirdly, all the gatekeeping did was cause misery and open us up to rampant abuse from providers (because it was so hard to get the paperwork together). I got sexually assaulted by a therapist because I was terrified I would have to go through all the work again and lose another four years struggling to get the stamp. She knew that she had me over a barrel because she was the only one who would greenlight me and abused her power accordingly. It was extremely common for stuff like this to happen, especially to trans women.

Fourthly, there was no benefit to it. If you think that was a good idea because blah blah AGP theyfabs bad optics, that is NOT why we are currently facing backlash from conservatives. That would have happened regardless.

Sure, sure, this is the standard story. And yet back then 6"3 autistic gamerhons weren't trooning en masse. You can't deny this.

The fact is that the trutrans coaching each other on how to subvert the gatekeeping was a feature, not a bug. Like you said, everyone who's actually trans and needed the treatment got it – and yet that was a fraction of the numbers trooning now, people who were all dissuaded from trooning by the mere existence of gatekeeping, or who never even caught on to the idea in the first place.
>>
>>44270767

>"To take the tuberous root of Pueraria with big leaves, pound and blend with cow's milk. The benefits of this medicine is to support memory, talk big, and be able to remember three books of the astrology, make the skin smooth like six year old kid, live more than 1,000 years and parasite diseases are not able to be of trouble."
>>
>>44281958
>Sure, sure, this is the standard story. And yet back then 6"3 autistic gamerhons weren't trooning en masse. You can't deny this.

Nobody was trooning en masse. But yes, absolutely all the groups people complain about here were transitioning back then. There were PLENTY of tall, clocky computer science lesbians who liked shoujo and video games. Like, all over the community. I linked to one in my initial response. There were also plenty of nonbinary people.

>The fact is that the trutrans coaching each other on how to subvert the gatekeeping was a feature, not a bug. Like you said, everyone who's actually trans and needed the treatment got it

No that's not the case. Plenty of people didn't get it because they could not afford it or access a willing doctor, or they were misinformed about what trans people really were. usually the most vulnerable people. We helped each other, but that could not make up for such crushing systemic disadvantages, especially if someone was more isolated.

Also, the people you are calling "trutrans" would never have been seen as such by many people here. I'm talking the theyest of theyfabs. the most malebrained of women and fembrained of men. Super autistic transbians in stockings with magical girl figurines. We coached each other regardless, and there was very little transition regret regardless.

I don't blame you for this, but you have a warped view of what things were like back then. It's similar to when I see people here say "transsexual" to hearken back to a day of masculine trutrans men and feminine trutrans women. Genderqueer/nonbinary people could also easily be transsexual back then, at least as the term was used within trans community. For the most part it just meant physically dysphoric and/or physically transitioned. The current use is a retcon, squishing limited info about the past into a framework to make people who don't like the present comfortable.
>>
>yet that was a fraction of the numbers trooning now, people who were all dissuaded from trooning by the mere existence of gatekeeping, or who never even caught on to the idea in the first place.

The people who were dissuaded or kept from that info were trans people. They just went on to waste years and decades of their lives, alcoholic, suicidal, self injuring, having abusive marriages, making kids they couldn't fully be there for. The same way that there was a huge, hidden percentage of gay and bi people in the 50s and 60s, but instead of coming out they lived miserable, harmful lives that also harmed other people. It is good for society that trans people be allowed access to information and transition.

All the trannies I knew in the 2000s were way more feminine and well adjusted and outright normal. I pine to go back all the time.

I wish more people would talk about the existence of nonbinary people before 2010s, I love that classic transsexualism really was whatever you wanted to make of it and I feel that way about it now. You shouldn't have to pigeonhole yourself into being another gender if you don't feel like it really works for you and you should be able to adjust your body to suit your needs. The future is now despite the current political climate.

Disagree. IDK where you werre of course but this definitely wasn't the case where I was. You'd hear stories of SOME, but don't tell me it wouldn't have been better if Jennifer Diane Reitz had been prevented from trooning.
>>
>>44283048
Of course they were, nobody's denying that AGP was a fixture of the landscape back then – Blanchard's whole typology came from observing oldtroons from back in the day. But despite /tttt/ stereotype, a jeep isn't a bald programmerhon who plays Battletech or a big hairy ogre who beats up shorties in the women's division of HEMA, it's definitionally a sexual fetish. AGPs are those who are fetishistically motivated transitioners and experience dysphoria as a consequence. (HSTS are those who are opportunistic transitioners – gay men so flaming it's just easier to be a woman – and do not expereince dysphoria. According to Blanchard that is)
>>
>>44282416
>I really do feel like a gay boy spiritually who just ended up being trans.. did anyone ever do that?
As above, that's literally what a HSTS is.

>I love that classic transsexualism really was whatever you wanted to make of it and I feel that way about it now. You shouldn't have to pigeonhole yourself into being another gender if you don't feel like it really works for you
Worth noting that to whatever degree it was happening all this was entirely internal to the trans subculture of the time. To the medical system it was 100% a question of "women in men's bodies and we have to skrungle their male flesh into a female shape but this should only be done in those cases where the patient can show an absolutely stereotypical femalebrained mindset so we know there's no mistake", this is why coaching was necessary. Some medical professionals were more or less secretly sympathetic depending on where you were but on a systemic level every effort was made to prevent people from learning the "correct" answers by rote, coaching, and otherwise helping each other cheat the system. The slightest amount of malebrain detected could spell massive delays or outright ejection from the pipeline, this happened to several people I knew more or less well, e.g. if you just wore a dress and heels to the appointment they could unironically perma-reject you for being too wobbly in the heels because they realized you weren't used to walking in them. (And to be clear, this type of shit was expected BEFORE you got HRT.)
>>
>>44284057
>HSTS are those who are opportunistic transitioners – gay men so flaming it's just easier to be a woman – and do not expereince dysphoria.
this doesnt exist in the west today. only in iran. this type remains male today (see james charles)
>>
>>44284143
yeah I prefer the more woke approach to getting HRT now, it was definitely a life saver for me no matter how I identify... because at the end of the day I'm still trans and I need the medicine for it
conforming to roles of the opposite sex is fucking stupid I'm glad they did away with that like what do they give testosterone to women that didn't entirely conform to being their gender? it hurts to hear about
>>
>>44284163
>this type remains male today (see james charles)
Arguably. I'm describing the Blanchard typology as it was actually conceived of in that post, not my own views.
>>
>>44284071
I did experience dysphoria is the thing though, doesn't mean I gotta be a woman about it
>>
>>44284451
Yeah the thing about only jeeps having dysphoria is the most obviously wrong thing about the typology tb h, like I can believe that most nondysphorics are HSTS and the two clusters are obviously *more or less* real but it's also extremely hard to deny the existence of Toob-style nondysphoric AGPs for example (reminder that Toob claims dysphoria literally does not exist).

ah sorry, its totally accurate then

Northern California. I worked with people all over the state and sometimes country though.

I think this may be the second time you've done a seemingly obvious "don't tell me--" and I have completely disagreed. Yes, I am telling you I prefer to live in a world where people transition rather than kill themselves or live worse lives. Jennifer Diane Reitz definitely included. I also appreciated much of her website.

>>44282831
>I love that classic transsexualism really was whatever you wanted to make of it and I feel that way about it now

Mm, more that being a transsexual was covered by transitioning, even if you were not binary.

To a doctor, or anyone within reach of getting their viewpoint published, however, it was very different, though. Most of them had beliefs of the kind that are echoed here. Only hot, binary, gender-conforming heterosexuals, ideally willing to live in deep stealth forever were transsexuals, should be allowed to be transsexuals.
>>

oldfag here, not a troon but i can maybe give you some insight of how things were back then

so, troons weren't really well known or recognized by people, and in general people didn't really care or would just think you are a weird fag and not think anything else about it
people were also more homophobic and outright mean about these things, so my trans friends back then would just never talk about it ever in public, etc

stealthing was the norm, or more people would try to stealth out of fear, if you were a obvious hon you would get hate crimed unironically
sissy types were more common

availability of information, resources and surgeries, and even community basically did not exist, or were extremely fringe
obviously trans people existed back then but yeah, like i said nowhere near as visible as they are today, like even now trans people are a very small community something like 2% of the global population

assuming you live in a civilized part of the world things are much better now overall

No, 2%

Only the US gets a figure of 6% and that's due either to extremely flawed methodology or to LGBT people from the third world preferentially emigrating to the US when they flee their shithole countries of origin. Or, actually it could also be due to chemicals in the water supply that are turning the frickin' frogs gay, which are illegal in the rest of the developed world. Either way the figure is vastly inflated, for example the 2011 British census indicated that 1.4% of bongs are LGBT and that's likely to be a more accurate figure than newer data which is both based on smaller sample groups and confounded by the teenage girl trend for calling themselves nonbinary and/or bisexual.

British census

>>
>>44286768
Back in 2011 it wasn't like that at all, the Conservatives had just legalized gay marriage with 80+% support and the big gay orgs, notably Stonewall, had not yet pivoted to tranny activism (this happened in 2012; their board had a meeting to decide whether to sunset the organization or switch focus and picked the wrong one), precipitating the backlash bongs are livng in now. In 2011 the future looked rosy for the LGBT and they had no obvious enemies in Bongland.

Terfs are an extremely small minority. Like ridiculously tiny.

You couldn't fill two buses with all the terfs in all of the UK. Women are concerned with domestic violence, street violence, access to shelters, support with abuse. Stopping a trans woman from having a wee or getting helped after being brutally raped is at the extreme bottom of the list.

Optics nuke? In the 00s? you're out of your mind. a) There was no defending us in the public eye back then. we were not human. b) no cis person knew about Jennifer Diane Reitz or the trans internet. People's knowledge of transness came from Jerry Springer.

What I valued is that she discussed what being trans was and struggling to come out and transition even with extremely rejecting parents and the difficulty of medical access. She also talked about being gay/bi and trans, including in her "letters" section, something that was hard to find in print media. Also she had good, if wordy, analysis of crabs-in-a-bucket mentality and internalized transphobia within the community.

none of this changes that I think it was good for her to transition.

>>44285219

Sure. I was extremely lucky. I'm glad I wasn't elsewhere. I was still beaten, sexually assaulted, etc, and once again, my knowledge of how things were for trans people also comes from people I worked with, nationally.

shes also rather famously a pedophile and explicitly advocated for "women the right to appreciate the short-lived beauty of boys, real boys, not simpering 30 year olds with shaved chests". other amazing quotes from her are "a woman of taste is a pederast- boys rather than men" and "he has to be old enough to be capable of sexual response but not yet old enough to shave. this window of opportunity is not only narrow, it is mostly illegal".
