Picked up this large book on philosophy at a book store as a beginner. Is it worth my time or should I not read it and throw it at the homeless?
I know you are there anons.
>>24678460Did you leaf through it at all? It looks from the cover it doesn't go over any big thinkers
>>24678901It pretty much goes over the basic thoughts of popular philosophers throughout the ages from the ancient world to now.
>>24678916I guess it depends how familiar with philosophy you are. Might be good for a gloss on philosophical history but don't expect anything groundbreaking
>>24678460DK books are more of a compendium of cool facts and trivia glossing over superficial themes. They work better as coffee table books rather than something you read deeply or to learn something.
I have this book and I find it quite nice for basic superficial reading about the history of philosophy
>>24678460DK publishes many "overview" books like that and the quality is very good
It will tell you less than the wikipedia article. Pick up Copleston if you want to learn about philosophy as a beginner, and/or watch the great courses lecture series Great Minds Of The Western Intellectual Tradition
