What are some sources on pre-Freudian theories of the decent concepts? I don‘t doubt it but have always heard it framed as "it was just common knowledge that your childhood continued to influence you" which is believable but unsatisfying.

Apparently Schopenhauer and Hartmann? He claimed to not have read Nietzsche until later but that’s hard to believe. But honestly he’s pretty original.
