Ligotti's biggest contribution to pessimism with this work is, probably, the fact he draws so heavily on continental pessimists which the Anglosphere tends to ignore. Zapffe especially is a rare mention outside circles dedicated to pessimism. That being said, he doesn't advance their thought very far and spends a lot of time just surveying the ground so to speak. The one exception to this, at least the one I can recall, is his attack on the idea of selfhood.

His analysis of horror as a genre in the essays towards the end is sadly undermentioned yet I think it helped to elevate simple horror tropes like the undead to a higher level of appreciation for me.

Do these niggas really think they're going to wake up in the afterlife and start telling God off? No, they're going to say thank you glorious Creator for saving my soul just like the rest of us

I mean, even Paul despaired of life. It's not against Christianity to reflect on the difficulties of existence.
>>
>>24678970
Why would you assume someone is christian just because they mention God?
And yeah life is hard, but basic existence itself is glorious. Sensation, movement, awareness. The simple stuff is kino aside from pain and sickness. I'd rather be reincarnated a billion times in a row as a cockroach than disappear forever.

I distinctly remember a passage about T.L trying to argue against the 'if you think life is so bad why don't you kys'.

Math < philosophy < horror < anime

Anime is unironically the deepest of all and if you have the IQ to truly appreciate it, it’s basically all you need

A reality that more people should internalize is that nobody actually defines God the same way, some have radically different understandings of what "meeting God" would even mean.

To the sort of person who seethes at God, God is their father who did not support or teach them correctly, an abusive parent or spouse. Others conceptualize God as the answer to questions tthat, no matter what the content bay actually be, represents the final resolution of their lifetime of anxiety.

And still others conceive of God as love, or as death, or as a divine hatred for disorder and filth, and all of these are supported by most belief systems, depending on interpretation.

And I remember someone posting a good counter against it.
Wish I could remember tho.

>fell for the ligotti meme

>>
why do people even care about this book? it's a summary and a collage of pessimist thought. ligotti adds nothing or very little to it. it's just an introduction and a help to find others to read. is that really it? /lit/ talks about it because /lit/ won't actually read philosophy outside of summaries and short sentiments?
