Finished pic above. I hated it. Zevin has some of the best control of the English language i've encountered but jesus christ this is the most blatantly misandrist female sexual fantasy/intentional martrydom i've encountered in a long time. The videogame background is just a mcguffin to get to the story she really does wanna tell: That of a basic love triangle where the female protagonist, who is all but a self insert knowing Zevin's background, is able to explore and enjoy life yet is saddled with enough grief and travesty throughout the story to encourage the readers to empathize with her. Sam is hardly even a character: He is an amalgamation of trauma used by Zevin's stand in to be a shoulder to cry on, a symbol of the patriarchy, a diversity inclusion and a way to demean "nice guys" and inceldom all at once. His character arc defines his maturity as giving up on his love for Sadie yet embracing all the responsibilities of adulthood without any of the pay off and subsisting as a beta orbiter. This is portrayed as his path to fufillmet and he ends up alone.I wouldn't be getting so heated if this book wasn't so widely lauded. It's a NYT bestseller and is portrayed not as the power fantasy slop that it is but as a deep character study that beautifully incorporates heavily male dominated spaces into what is more commonly a female targeted plot structure.IDK i've talked a lot of shit but wanna reiterate that Zevin, despite being an incredibly pretentious living stereotype of an upper middle class jewish woman who went to an ivy league school and then married into more money, is a good writer. She is writing from her life experience I just don't like her as a person and that person bleeds through her writing

>>24680575>Zevin has some of the best control of the English language i've encounteredJust say "I don't read much," it's more concise
>>24680694if I said "out of modern authors" would it be better?
>>24680785That's still too many words. "I don't read much" is sharper.
>>24680575What do you like about her writing? Seems like it’s trying to be like infinite jest with the Shakespeare title but the pdf I’ve seen online isn’t impressive
>>24680575I I'm going to judge this book by its cover >OK let's use this existing cliche artwork >And for the title let's just use a Macbeth quote but uhhh make the font rainbow to show this is only 99.9% someone else's work, OK done!
