Lord Dunsany and Clark Ashton Smith are the goats of fantasy, they were short story writers but I would go there and avoid modern fluff

what fantasy books should I read after Tolkien's?
I didn't think LoTR was THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME but it is unique and really fun
jumped into asoiaf recently after The Hedge knight and I gotta say.. it's not that fun.. cliffhanging and exciting but not my cup of tea.
and I feel like modern fantasy writers would be "too modest" for my taste

Did you like the Appendices? Yes? Well, then The Silmarillion, obviously.

What about the Shannarra trilogy. I liked LOTR, and I liked this too. The author even says he's paying homage to tolkein, straight out. I liked the character SteeJans. I almost got a vanity license plate that read SteeJan (7 letters only, lol)
