Who gets him right?

Any other bios you particularly enjoyed? I thought Steve Marin's Born Standing Up, Tina Fey's Bossypants, and Norm Macdonald's Based on a True Story were all great but they are all autobios. Is it even possible for a third party to accurately depict creatives?

Biographies are as bad as philosophy and history. All complete wastes of time.

Why are you interested in what some celebrity did?what do you gain from knowing factoids about celebrities? Grow up.

op wants to know about the dramatic rise and fall of the king. there is nothign wrong with that. his life is a subject fit for a shakespeare treatment. if only shakespeare lived a few more years, we would be watching ELVIS alongside Hamlet

It's the multiple distinct eras that fascinate me. Fron the movies and musicals i feel like i have the gist: Blues into cashgrab into comeback into Vegas. Feel like a lot of the Elvis media doesn't get into the comeback into Vegas transformation. Hard to get him right and the takes seem to vary wildly

Is that supposed to be Elvis? Horrible casting

But yeah Elvis was a fascinating figure. I guess there isn't an equivalent of I Walk The Line for him?

I really enjoyed The Seeker King. Really got into Elvis’ interest in meditation and esotericism

He doesn't have the look but I liked his portrayal a lot. Played up the "he's in his own world genius" act in a fun way.

Obviously the classic is Life of Johnson by James Boswell. And although it is not exactly a biography, Conversations with Goethe by Eckermann.

I am a big Elvis fan myself but I don't think he wrote any songs which makes him a less important figure than someone like Michael Jackson or even Prince

Idk about his impact on the culture or the king of rock and roll or whatever. To me he's the clearest example of pathos in the industry. Especially as he aged his music and covers just start dripping with it. I'm curious how a man like that exists and interacts with the world. From the stereotypes he was like a raw nerve, only allowed to exist because he had so much money that insulated him from real life. Interesting too that he was under the control of someone else. I think even he realized he couldn't handle the world straight up. But again that's only coming from his depictions in media and me reading importance into his music.

Just curious if that aspect of him was ever explored by someone with real access.

Maybe Elvis What Happened? By Red West and the other Memphis Mafia guys. I confess I haven’t read it but it’s on my list

he was an incredible performer. probably the most charismatic in history, at least in america. that comeback show was amazing.
