Is this worth a read? It looks very aesthetically cool, but it's just YA space dystopia fiction. Normally I'd just enjoy the schlock, but I check the Wiki for each book and all of them start>MC is still fighting against the evil people in chargeI've gone past 3-4 books and every synopsis starts the same exact way. It seems like an extremely dragged out series. I have my guilty pleasures and don't mind it being schlocky, but I hate stories that are so decompressed that they move at a snail's pace, especially when they're of lower tier. So, thoughts?
>>24687848Apparently it has cuckshit. I'm with it in books with serious artistic merit, but I don't want it in my entertainment.
>>24687848They're enjoyable books. Only the first is YA, you have to get that out of the way for the series to pick up. The story is not slow paced either, it's just a large war that happens throughout the series. And ignore >>24687864 because it doesn't. It has white, bonde haired women in relationships with other white blonde haired men.
>>24687848It's good. But you have to keep in mind the author is unbelievably edgy and his edgelord tendencies come out in full force in book 3 and the second series.
>>24687898>She begins a relationship with Darrow shortly after leaving the Institute, but Darrow's decision to serve her father and go to the Academy pushes them apart after a year. Knowing her family is in danger, she pledges her allegiance to Octavia au Lune with her only precondition being that her family is kept safe. Octavia accepts and takes her on as a lancer. During her two years as a lancer of House Lune, Virginia starts a relationship with Cassius, not out of love, but instead as a further step to ensure the safety of her family. She and Darrow meet again where both argue, and each declares that they cannot recognize the other. She watches Darrow easily defeat and humiliate Cassius in a duel. When Darrow is about to strike Cassius down, Virginia stops him and asks him not to lose himself. Darrow complies, and Virginia and him share a moment, back together on the same page. She ends her relationship with Cassius shortly after this.
>>24687848>extremely dragged outyep its this, its possible to summarise the first 3 books (all i actually read) in a few paragraphs and not miss anything important>>24687898>white, bonde hairedkek, dont you mean gold skinned? op this book is also an allegory for racism, and is written by a man cowardly enough to not acknowledge it in any way. its overall not a good series and probably isnt what youre looking for
>>24687972She was not in a relationship when she went with Cassius. >>24687976They don’t have gold skin. Also it’s not about racism, it’s a commentary on class and eugenics.
>>24687982>MC's ex, who the MC might still have feelings for (wiki is not clear about this, but I assume it's true since they get together again) planning to marry the man who betrayed him is not cuckshitYeah whatever man
>>24688010It was never mentioned that Mustang was going to marry Cassius. Where did you get that from? It's also not cuckshit because they were not together, Darrow had publicly gone against what Mustang wanted by going with Augustus and they were not speaking for two years and had moved on. It may shock you virginanon, but people will have sex with others, especially when not in a committed relationship no matter what your oneitis autism thinks.
>>24688035From the wiki:>In Golden Son, it is revealed that after Darrow left for the Academy, Virginia began a relationship with Cassius and was even engaged to be married to him.
>>24688062ok, I must have forgotten that part but it doesn't change what I said. It was a political alliance to protect her family.
I found the series very enjoyable, but borderline misery porn. I hate misery porn, so I think that speaks to how good RR is. It's got all the melodrama and asspulls of a good space opera and the combat scenes are overall very gripping. I didn't even really hate the first book, which is the one people call YA and the worst in the series.Since people are discussing Mustang's brief relationship with Cassius using wiki language right now, I'd like to clarify with some spoilersShe never has any feelings for anyone but Darrow and was only with Cassius to spy on his family and keep hers safe on the orders of the big bad evil bitch, who was going to betray her and end the whole thing anyway. Mustang later puts an arrow through Cassius's throat with zero hesitation. There is no cuckshit and no love triangle and the "relationship" is so minor in the over all scheme of the series that I'm surprised it keeps being brought up. She also has zero plans to marry him. When you're reading Golden Son and this relationship seems like a big deal, it makes you hate Mustang because of how we view relationships and our natural inclination to back Darrow as he is the MC, with the added context of the juxtaposition of Mustang and Darrow being cute in book 1 to suddenly being split up in book 2, and that is probably why some people act like it's a big deal. But again, it's such a non-issue that it seems silly to have dwelled on it at all as you continue to the later books. By the sequel series Mustang is a POV character and there are zero doubts about how based she actually is. Cassius also gets a lot of development.
>>24688098>I didn't even really hate the first book, which is the one people call YA and the worst in the series.I know, besides obvious Hunger Games parallels, how is it considered YA? Golden women kept on being raped and molested, even that early on.
>>24688098Good post. It's also worth mentioning that golds are so nonchalant about sex and nudity that the way Cassius and Mustang act can feel weird to us, and Darrow, but that's a commentary on the debauchery and very clearly morally decrepit gold society that the author creates.
>>24688101>how is it considered YA? Pretty sure people say that just because it's about teenagers fighting each other and taking down the evil government, which is the standard YA dystopian template of the 10s. The nasty shit like the rapes and mutilations that go on in RR just get ignored or never make it into the synopsis that people base their opinions on. At this point it's criminal that the first book is so different from the rest of the series.
>>24688114>At this point it's criminal that the first book is so different from the rest of the series.I believe that's because it was forced on the author by the publisher to make it more mass market. Once he got his book deal, he ignored it and pushed on with his space opera war. That said, the scenes in the books where the characters reminisce over their time in The Institute was very good and comfy.
