the ancient classics, of course (tamil has its own ancient classics as well, of a very different sort). and beyond that they have their tradition, with a grand master, some dramatists, a few later masterful writers of pseudo-epics, and eventually various vernacular traditions. not much lyric poetry in sanskrit but there are a few famous collections.
the really interesting thing to me is the currently still living vernacular epics.

what's your favorite one of them?

of the vernacular epics? i haven't read any of them yet, they may not be all that great in reality, i just find the idea of it fascinating, and i tend to like those sorts of things.
rigveda is the most authentic and important and transporting. mahabharata probably the most powerful and impactful. kalidasa, whom i also have not read, is considered the most masterful and perfect.
i guess i could recommend the songs of kabir translated by tagore, very pure and beautiful. potentially influenced by sufi poetry though i think. if you want something in the same vein but more purely indian, there are earlier devotional poets, especially from the south.
