I have a setting that I've been thinking about/developing for a few years on and off. I really want to write something in it, but I've always been a horrible writer. I can't for the life of me come up with compelling character motivations, good prose, natural dialogue, plot hooks, or even any decent basis for a story. To make it worse, I'm afraid of making something so utterly dogshit that it'll cause me to discarding the setting and give up entirely. So wat dou?
>I can't for the life of me come up with compelling character motivations, good prose, natural dialogue, plot hooks, or even any decent basis for a storyYou should practice those things first and hone your skills before committing to a more ambitious project.
oh .. that's easy .. you just dream !! it's all a dream anyways .. so just embrace the everlasting world of the imagination .. and remember that all dreams all connected to allow other dreams .. in a dream conjunction-nexus-node !! yes and this way, no grammar mistakes !! and perhaps best of all: AI cannot dream !! hahaha !! it can't do shit in the dreamverse !! that's why we should build our mountain fortresses inside our minds .. yes we should build those walls very high i'm thinking .. with plentiful arrow-slits .. for dreams arrows ..

>>24691204Everybody is 'a creative' inside their own mind. What differentiates creators is that they don't just think about stuff, they do it. I know it's just basic self-help wisdom, but it's true.To be more precise - try to actually read stuff somewhat similar to you interest and try to get inspiration from it. If you are developing an epic fantasy setting, read The Silmarillion and try to think about how something like this could be written about your world. Actually, don't just read The Silmarillion, read at least several other sagas/epics/creation myths from different world mythologies. Also, read top 10 fantasy novels from the of of /sffg/. After reading a novel, read critical reviews about it highlighting issues with it and think about how you could avoid those pitfalls. Also, read a few history textbooks about periods/cultures that you are most inspired by. The more well-read you are, the wider your scope is, the better you would be at implementing your ideas. See https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/11420817-a-writer-sets-out-to-write-science-fiction-but-isn-t Same goes for creating compelling stories, characters and so on. So, in short: practice both reading and writing. A lot.
>>24691204>How do you turn your worldbuilding project into an actual book?>I have a setting that I've been thinking about/developing for a few years on and offSo daydreaming. >I am bad at writingThen practice getting better at writing, duh. You can use your daydreaming "project" as insperation to keep you motivated and to give you stuff to write about. If you feel intimidated smart with smaller writing projects. Write a page long story. A scene. Short stories around a theme. Do a write up about a fictional event from several perspectives. Stuff like that. Once you feel your writing is less shit craft wise, and your writing output has become consistent through making writing a habit rather than something you do once in a blue moon, then you are probably ready to try and write a book. Maybe about your daydreaming, maybe about something else. Your first draft will almost certainly be utterly shit. That is what revisions are for. After a few drafts if you stick with it you can polish it up into something decent, maybe even good. From there just keep going.
Don't try.
>>24691204Just steal from what you like, it's that easy.
>>24691204Hire somebody to either help you learn, help you develop your story, or just write it for you. Which one sounds good to you?
>>24691204Go the GRRM route and just rip directly from history.Or if you don't want to be a hack, learn to get in touch with your emotions unironically. There's a stark difference between those who world build and those who can do the rest of a book.
>>24691204Something something 2 groups of people making pottery, something something one group has 6 months to make a cup, one group makes one every day and presents the last something something cup a day group but-blasts the masterpiece retards.Just fuking write you lazy ameba. I started 1 month ago and already have like 8 pages.
>>24691204You've1. made a static setting2. made generalities without specificsYou might have pages on "wizards", but do you have anything about "a wizard"? You might have countries, but they're not done if you can't think of like 10 reasons why they want to go to war with each other right now or make alliances or DO things in general. The world SHOULD announce its plot possibilities itself.
>>24693141>1. made a static settingYes, this is one of the major problems I have. To give some more context, only because I think it's necessary to explain the issue I'm having:>the setting is hell>the natural environment corrodes your soul>you can replenish your soul by consuming other souls (you must process it first)>long ago, major powers laid claim to different regions of hell, monopolizing the flow of new souls within to sustain themselves>the main character that I would like to develop is an irrelevant regional overseer on the outskirts of hell>he's kind of a lazy retard, the only thing he has cared about thus far is surviving, and he has more or less achieved that in perpetuityBasically, the only thing worth fighting over are souls. At the lowest level, this creates a strong motivating force, but at the highest level, there is little to no incentive to change things. Which, honestly, is thematically correct. It should be very bleak, depressing, and almost unchanging.Anyways, this is a problem because I need some sort of catalyst to actually have a story. I would like the story to be about the main character's search for meaning, why he is the way he is, why he does the things that he does, what he actually wants, if anything. But there still needs to be a reason for him to start doing things. I'd rather that motivation come externally, but I can't think of anything good. Maybe internal faction conflicts, or maybe just a fetch quest. I don't know.
>>24694121>he's kind of a lazy retardSelf-insert much?
