Do I read King Rat or Shogun first? I have all the books except Gai-Jin and Whirlwind.

King Rat, is amazing and very very short, like a quarter of the length of Shogun.

Ok, I guess I'll read them in publication order then.

Personally, this is just me but I would read Noble House first. Then King Rat (elaborates the backstory of a minor character in Noble House) and Tai-Pan (elaborates the backstory of the Noble House itself). Then Shogun, but be prepared for the quality dip. Clavell's grasp of China was insane, but his notion of Japan was sub-90s-weeb.
