What are your favourite editions to buy?I really like the penguin modern classics although the oxford world classics are quite nice too.
My favourite are La Pléiades and Arden Shakespeares
>>24703603Oxford has the best paperbacks imo though my absolute favorites are the Loeb Classical Library and Everymans library
Wordsworth classics unironicallyTheir old covers are actually pretty good
>>24703603Manuscripts.
I've begun cataloging and pricing books on a large scale, am starting a book selling business and learning more about how the industry works.Mass market paperbacks price the lowest. Mass market paperbacks of what are arguably the greatest novels of history are tragically filed under what I call "three dollar stinkers" as the price barely covers the shipping costs. The most consistently high priced books are educational and academic texts along with rare copies of great novels and rare books in general. Especially first editions and vintage copies.
>>24703911Two types of books I refuse to sell: Smut books and religious books. Just doesn't sit right in my conscience.Owning a business and selling things sits just fine in my conscience. It is Sunnah. As long as one is honest, fair, and Halal.Again I find myself relating with Jews. Many Jewish immigrants started book selling businesses to employ themselves in America.First Kafka, the isolated religious minority, and now the Jewish bookseller. Maybe we have a shared experience in some ways, Muslims and Jews in the West.
>>24703911Bro.Sell me your "Call of the Wild".
>>24703931This one is a "three dollar stinker" where selling the book alone barely covers the cost of shipping. Ideally, multiple are sold at once.Such a shame, it is a nice vintage book with illustrations and a charming story. These books don't deserve to be priced so low, but that is how it is. You can probably find a copy at a second hand book store.
>>24703966>Such a shame, it is a nice vintage book with illustrations and a charming story.I know. That's why I want it, my dude!
Arcturus are a great budget publisher.
>>24703603I like Library of America.
>>24704002I own the Arcturus editions of Paradise Lost and Divine Comedy and I love them
>>24703603Oxford imprints like Loeb and Dumbarton Oaks > Yale/Princeton university press > Penguins = Oxfords, completely depends on the translator and the quality of the introduction and notes.
>>24703603Everyman's
Oxford on average has the best quality annotations. Penguin is extremely hit or miss. Norton can be great but also has a bunch of editions with dogshit critical essays comprising half the volume.
>>24703603I like collecting NCE books. So many notes and explanations in them
>>24703630I recently took the Oxford-pill after being a devout Penguin consoomer and the quality is far superior, and it perplexes me as to how Oxford paperbacks are cheaper than Penguin.
>>24703620>PleiadesThe characters are sooo small. I buy them only for the correspondence and analysis
>>24706894>Oxford paperbacks are cheaper than PenguinReal. I found a copy of a nice Oxford World's Classics at Indigo for $10.95+tax CAD the other day.
