Why is Dead Souls so liked? It was pretty good, but it felt a bit unfinished and inconsistent, like a first or second draft.

I just found it to be a comfy read. It was supposed to be the first in a three part series, Gogol's re-imagining of the Divine Comedy in 19th Century Russia which would have been kino had he not burned the rest of it
