Does Substack matter at all in the fiction world? Are there any must reads unfolding over there right now?
>>24709726substack is a blog for people who feel compelled to write
>>24709726I use it, I write on it, but overall, it is largely algorithm-gaming engagement slop and bullshit. There are gems, to be sure, but notes is the worst thing that ever happened to it.
>>24709726>>24709726I'm doomed to obscurity. I'll perish, burning all manuscripts of my works, wiping all of it off the internet, they return to ideal world, just as I return to the elements in my apartment.
tried it a bit, but it's mostly slop. the algo never really pushes gems.
>>24711566>tried it a bit, but it's mostly slop. the algo never really pushes gems.Said anon, evident writer of 'gems'
>>24711572no, i push coal. but a man can recognise slop without being the progenitor of quality, and if i wanted a series of pop-psych articles, milquetoast political critiques, and general millenial whinging, i'd probably just go to bluesky or something.
>>24709726https://thenewshadows.substack.com/p/the-graves-portionYou tell me.
>>24711683>https://thenewshadows.substack.com/p/the-graves-portionOK bozo I'll read it aloud with my gf when the night gets cozy, if we like it i'll create an account to give you a like, if it sucks I'll drop a tear of blood to Minerva so you stub your toe in the morning for years to come, deal?
>>24711775Thanks anon.
if there only was a way to promote your writings

>>24711794I read it, GF said the ideas were good, but you have to improve in how you communicate them.Personally, you simply don't have enough pages to both try and flesh out the world in the way you are trying and tell this intimate story, it feels forced. Every attempt you do to name drop some literal who prophet or create some depth for their religion (completely unimportant to the plot) it just feels distracting. At one point we are told of the "they already suspect cause' of the disappearing servants" with no prior knowledge of this being brought on, the conversation with the stage coach driver in general feels as heavy handed exposition. Also, the setting felt very shakesperian, so I don't know if goblins and elfs added anything to the recipe. Keep on practicing anon, its a good starting point.
>>24709726I've yet to figure out what the point of it is. Everything I see on there is so bad it makes /lit/ look good. It's quite possibly the biggest pseud magnet of a website ever made.
>>24712831As somebody who has a Substack, and has been trying to kind of make it on Substack, I've noticed that if you're not bringing in a preexisting following from elsewhere it's hard sledding. All the big guys on Substack seem to be guys who were already big elsewhere and then moved over to Substack later, taking their audience with them.
>>24712833I can see that. It's incredibly cultish and full of grifters. Not surprising that I also see a lot of Jews and Christians on there. It's unfortunate, because it would be cool to just find relaxed dudes who read books to talk to. /lit/ would be that except /lit/ barely reads.
>>24712723Yeah small stories in a large fantasy world are always a difficult balancing act. I don't want to omit mention of the fantastical elements, given their presence in the characters' world, however distant they are from the action. For the most part I've turned to novels because I can be slow and expository. I wish I'd started writing them sooner but my local university's creative writing program only taught short fiction. Even today I get an idea for a short story every so often and have to get it out instead of work it into a bigger project.Anyway, thanks for reading my sloppa. If I stub my toe tomorrow I'm blaming you unless you like my post lol.
