But finding out just how deeply the novel is a modern phenomenon (admittedly, the name should have been a clue) and how accepted it‘s been throughout history to put your work in verse or in plays was quite a revelation to my stunted american mind.

Novels are fine but yes most of them are unnecessarily long. Around 200-300 pages and less than 100,000 words is the right length most of the time. I've read novels where I think you could seriously cut out half the chapters and it would be better.
