eve is a pretty flat character compared to all the others. she's just a bimbo ditz.

So I don't really think she is supposed to be an interesting character by herself. Most of the intricacies of that character or archetype occur elsewhere, namely in Satan.
Easily my favorite book. There is so much beauty coursing through each verse. The scale in the war in heaven was so massive. My favorite part is probably when Satan is going to Earth and he sees a woman giving birth to dogs that then rape her so she gives birth to more dogs. And the story about how Satan created her and raped her in heaven and her son was Death. You could tell Milton would have been a terrific 4chan shitposter.

When Eve describes her dream it's "happy though thou art, happier thou mayest be", "among the gods thyself a goddess... by merit thine" etc. He is appealing to her vanity and pride, which are evident from her very first moments when she is caught up in her own reflection. It's a mirror of Satan with Adam taking a similar role to Jesus, in that he is greater and more favored of God etc.I'm not saying that Eve is as evil as Satan. But one of the major themes of the poem is the sin within human beings. People tend to sympathize to some degree with Satan, and instead of seeing this as an indictment against themselves, they see it as a flaw in the divine order.

One could definitely argue the degree to which she was influenced by Satan in other respects, but there are so many parallels between them in the story. One I just remembered is the fact that Satan, engendering with Sin, first brings death into the world, while Eve tempted by sin brings death into the human world ("I who brought death to all am to be graced the source of life"). I think I exaggerated when I said that their personalities are "basically the same", but do think all of these parallels between them are intentional and the text more or less spells it out. They do share the same fundamental flaw.
