Sorry, we're the best at literature. Nobody has a Quixote. You can never have one. You can't have a Quixote in any other language. It's impossible. You don't have the language to write a Quixote. At best, you can have some intelligent translator who can help you see, from a distance, more or less what the Quixote is. You either know Spanish or you can't taste it. It's only tasted in Spanish. There are things that are only tasted in Spanish. Now, if you want to learn useless languages.

Quixote was written in English thoughbeit

Why, yes, I did read El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha in its purest old Spanish language form without any additional notes or annexes as it was written by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, what gave it away?

>Many times they tell me that literature is immaterial, they tell me. No, no! I’ll throw a Quixote at your head, eh? I’ll give you a hit with Quixote on the head, and you say: ‘Immaterial!’ Right?

Don Quixote is not even the greatest Spanish novel. The greatest Spanish novel is "The Critic" by Baltasar Gracian. It was Schopenhauer's most favorite novel, pic related. It still hasn't been translated into modern English, utterly baffling.

Did he say something about The Critic?

"I'm laughing at Michel Foucault who says that the author is a social function. THE AUTHOR IS NOT A SOCIAL FUNCTION, MAN. The author is the person who constructs the ideas that you and I read, objectified in literary works... which will survive all of us. What the hell do you mean a social function! What the hell do you mean the author is dead! Cervantes is more alive than God!"
>>
This work has not been written because its author intends to aspire to anything. The author has no objective nor any interest in the academic, university, or professional world currently institutionalized in different fields. If that were his aim, instead of having produced this book he would have devoted his time to doing hallway tasks and university intrigue, the activities most highly valued and rewarded, today and always, in the current Spanish, European, and American university (especially in the latter, so boastful when announcing to the world how much work is done there: a great sham).

Teenagers have a blast reading Nietzsche — and idiots do too. I mean, there’s nothing better to keep a fool entertained than giving him The Genealogy of Morals, the aphorisms, the Superman... all that stuff they just love. And the really serious part is that after reading it, they end up even dumber than they were before!

But the true conquistadores stayed in Latin America. Only the cowards who were afraid of the sea and America stayed in Spain.

Picaresques stab the scholastic as much as nobility putting on airs— that a DFW felt the need to kill the modernist tome at all was craven perversity. Nietzche's remarks on Cervantes' viciousness are apt— there is no better symbol of where the inversion of values leads, and that is the genius of that most 'self-aware' of novels.

One of his funniest takes is that when China inevitably replaces the US as the global hegemon the only chance of survival for spanish culture is to seduce the chinese like the greeks did with the romans. And if the chinese are as smart as they appear, then they will obviously recognize the greatness and superiority of spanish culture and literature (unlike those pesky anglos and other ungrateful euros).
