Fichte’s a hard sell because the “gist” is not interesting, it is common sense. You are free. And he assumes this as a presupposition, he doesn’t think you can demonstrate it. His system is a deep metaphysical inquiry into what it means to be free once you’ve accepted that you are free but there are no exciting results (besides communism). A philosopher’s philosopher.
