Yes actually it’s pretty good.
The movie has to reject the framework of the entire story being conveyed retrospectively to an anonymous reader. LSD is also a major plot device in the book that’s important to setting up the ending, Patrick and his gay story is way more important to the book and has far more narrative life that comes to heavily involve Charlie, whereas in the movie it’s only ever relevant to explain why Charlie’s friends accept him again. The movie doesn’t do justice to just how insufferable his weird practice gf really was, in the book it’s clear Charlie did nothing wrong. I also think the reveal at the end has more purpose in the book, even if it’s blatantly telegraphed.
At its core it’s basically a book about shitty toxic young relationships and why people want them. The movie has some of that, but it’s more about making hipsters look cool to kids with a laser focus on the quasi-romance between Charlie and Sam.

So is 99% of contemporary slop fiction, especially if it's le coming of age bullshit, but you're still asking if you should read it. Get over yourself, fag.
