I've been reading pic related and I'm just not getting it. It all just seems like Bible fan fiction to me, desu. Like there doesn't really seem to be any profound wisdom or knowledge in it, or maybe I'm just not getting it. Maybe I'm just a hylic. If gnosis is a real thing, then I'd like to achieve it, but I'm not sure I'll achieve it by reading this
What are your thoughts on the Nag Hammadi and gnosticism?
>>
>"...and these are the super secret things that Jesus told to his secret twin brother after he died and resurrected"
>"... and this is the super secret book of John where Jesus secretly told John how the world really began that no one knows about"
>"... and this is the super secret book of James that Jesus told him to write and not to tell the other disciples about"

That one’s canon though

OP you will never “achieve gnosis” because you aren’t experiencing the deeply melancholic affect resulting from an acute awareness of being a fallen, embodied soul, I.e. an extremely religious person in the violent, impoverished, 2nd century Mediterranean basin. The fact that you have a collection of gnostic texts that you can just read on your couch already precludes you from the experience of these being actually highly valuable, secret, and extremely inaccessible writings combined with a pre-modern experience of nature as intrinsically spiritual, and in the case of the gnostikoi, evil and malevolent. It’s a way of being forever beyond our grasp. You should actually be happy that you aren’t living in that kind of world.

I haven’t read a lot it but have generally been enjoying it, here are my recommendations so far. There is a great deal of variance in terms of quality and symbolic system from each tractate to each tractate; hence it’s best to take each work as wholly unconnected from each other work, or even any outside work because the symbols are synthesized in new idiosyncratic ways for each tractate My favorites so far are Gospel of Thomas and Gospel of Phillip so it could do you well to start with those. Accept no claims literally but as psychological claims encoded in the interplay of each symbolic system. It is very easy to preclude yourself from approaching the works on their own terms if you get hung up on their so-called ‘gnostic’ character and the expected through-line of ‘material world bad’. Instead I encourage you to consider carefully one by one how each claim the writers make is could apply to your life or the human condition in general, thinking about what the symbols stand for in current worldview. Enjoy!
