Conan Doyle is also remembered for an adventure book about dinosaurs or something.

This quote legitimately made me hate Mark Twain. He really is the stereotypical American in all the bad ways. It's a total farce that he's the one who carried the banner of American letters abroad, while Hawthorne and Melville languished in obscurity until the 20th Century.

As opposed to a stereotypical person of another nation huh?

Twain made it American, Hawthorne and Melville kept things old world, wrote in their style using their ideas and mostly reduced America to plot.

Twain was a humorist

What most everyone misses about this quote is the "every time," if Twain hated Pride and Prejudice as much as some think there would be no "every time." His anger towards Austen where far more nuanced and not so 4chan.
