Why did they stop writing comedy books? It feels like around the late 90s they just stopped being written.I can't think of the last funny thing I read written after 2000 that isn't a light novel.
>>24726639Jonathan Ames wrote a PG Wodehouse homage back in 2004. I remember thinking it was ok when I read it. Gary Shteyngart is I guess trying to be funny, but I wasn't impressed by what I've read of him (I think just Absurdistan).
>>24726656George Saunders isn't haha funny, but his stuff tends to have an absurd, comedic edge.
Not a single comedy movie in the last decade either, and that's a good thing. Laughing is so passé. Get with the times, gramps
>>24726664Kek. Whining partout I guess laughter is de trop
>>24726660I love Saunders and never see him mentioned here. Just reread Civilwarland in Bad Decline last month
>>24726676Have you read Lincoln on the Bardo? I got if for my dad a while ago with the intent of stealing it at some point and reading it myself, but I still haven't done so.
>>24726686I haven’t either. This does remind me to get around to it though
>>24726664>satanic digits as usual Duly noted. My ex-girlfriend had the same attitude you do and now she can't walk.
>>24726639eh? there's literally an award for comic novels every yearyou're probably just a zoomer. the most humourless generation of all time
>>24726656>recovery era???
this is from 2008 and it had quite a few scenes that made me laugh.
Writing something funny or even amusing is way harder than writing something profound, cool or sad.
>>24726639The Pale King was funny. Pynchon's upcoming novel is sure to be a gas.
>>24726639We have quips. And jokes are offensive
>>24727906That's why the humour is so self-deprecating: you can't be called ableist and racist if you always make fun of yourself. They can't even fathom making fun of a group they don't belong to.
>>24726639Now is not the time for laughter.
Because it requires being genuine and sincere to write. Far easier to use it as a tool to hide your insecurities or wield as a cudgel
>>24727070We title modern eras by their Eminem album, just like we used to do with British monarchs. (I think maybe it's referring to post-9/11, but it's not a phrase I've ever seen.)
>>24727901Good call on Pynchon. I've only read his shorter novels (Crying Of Lot 49 and Inherent Vice), but they were both funny.
>>24726639>Why did they stop writing comedy books? When offending people became verboten.
they didnt they literally give out awards yearly for comedic books like that wodehouse award. id go farther and say humor is basically a standard part of modern literary fiction
>>24726639I remember asking for comedy books as a kid and being given those corny joke books. Probably would have read more if they had given me something.
I asked ChatGPT if it knew any good contemporary comedy and it gave me Yellowface
>>24728714Tao Lin's early stuff isn't funny funny, but it's weirdly amusing. Haven't read past Eee Eee Eee.
>>24729032Oh yeah, this was funny: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjcOK2T0lPo
>>24729034....wut?
People have lost all sense of humor and the ability to recognize irony. You can write the most absurd, ridiculous bullshit and everyone will just take it straight, like hmm that was very strange
