>0.00001% of the current population are readers>0.0001% of said 0.00001% read contemporary literature>How many of them read fiction that isn't genre-related?How do you, as the aspiring writer, approach this issue, anon?
>>24726840Start with cultivating a following before getting into itUnironically why some people dedicate their time writing for Ao3 and Wattpad
>>24726840I kidnap people at gunpoint and don't release them until they've read my novel and told me what they think about it.
>>24726840If I wanted fame or attention, I wouldn't pursue writing. Literature is a solitary endeavor and the writer is addressing an individual, not an audience or crowd or society, just (You). This is what separates literature from the other arts, the reader is not in a theater or gallery sharing in the emotion of an audience, it is just the reader and the writer alone for hours sharing a sort of intimacy no other art can achieve.
>>24726840Writing is an activity done for itself. Read Plato. You don't understand this, that's why you'll never write anything of worth.
>>24726860>Writing is an activity done for itselfelaborate on this
>>24726863Quoth Seneca:>‘in the same way as an artist derives more pleasure from painting than from having completed a picture’. When his whole attention is absorbed in concentration on the work he is engaged on, a tremendous sense of satisfaction is created in him by his very absorption. There is never quite the same gratification after he has lifted his hand from the finished work. From then on what he is enjoying is the art’s end product, whereas it was the art itself that he enjoyed while he was actually painting.
>>24726848I have fans on Ao3 but it feels weird and wrong to convert that following to my non-genre litfic. Probably wouldn't even work if I tried.
>>24726854>Literature is a solitary endeavor and the writer is addressing an individual, not an audience or crowd or society, just (You). This has only ever been true since the advent of modernity
>>24726906>can't into present tense>can't into pedentryIn those days literature was not an art, just a storage medium for other arts.
>>24726848>tfw have almost 4000 followers on Twitter>few hundred followers on Facebook tooI'm going to try to convert this into a reader base when I start releasing a story of mine online in the next few months. Wish me luck, /lit/.
>>24726840If you commit a great act, many people will read your book.
