Worst book I ever read, redefined the useful idiot MC. Most retarded 4yos have more brain cells than Helward.
>>
>>24727415
Let me guess, you didn't finish the book.
>>
>>24727441
I did and I regretted it, kept waiting for Helward to be something more than a useful idiot and a patronizing mouth piece, but it never happenes.
>>
>>24727443
A patronizing mouthpiece for whom?
>>
>>24727446
An author or is no where near as clever as he thinks.
>>
>>24727448
And what message do you think the author was trying to get across through Helward?
>>
>>24727452
As I said, his own cleverness. Not doing a good job of making your case.
>>
>>24727456
I haven't made my case, because you haven't defined exactly what the author is being charged with. You're being vague and dodgy. I doubt you even remember what you read, so you're too embarrassed to answer the questions properly.

>author thinks he is clever
>creates character to explain how clever he is
>character is a useful idiot
>author assume character is smarter than reader
>so character explains everything to the reader
>mainly explains how clever the author is
>because author can not imagine his reader understanding
A word of advice, in the future when you get triggered, just ask the anon who triggered you to explain. Worst case is you learn something and don't come across like a moron.
>>
>>24727471
I was probing for an explanation with my questions. You were being a monosyllabic tard, by answering 1 sentence at a time.

Now you explain, and your explanation doesn't make any sense. It's a jumble of buzzwords by someone who is attempting to dodge a real explanation. The author "thinks he's clever"? In what way?
He creates a character to explain how clever he is? Helward does not do a lot of explaining in the book. In fact, he mostly asks questions. And when he's challenged to think outside of the box, he often struggles to adapt to new ideas, opting to remain with the status quo. Or go down the path of least resistance. Helward is a man without answers.

>author assume character is smarter than reader
Definitely not. Helward is just kind of average in this story. He has his talents, sure. But so does everyone. He's no one exceptional, he's no philosopher, he's no great thinker.
>so character explains everything to the reader
And he certainly doesn't do that.

Now I'm wondering if you read the book at all. Or if you just got on /lit/ and chose a random book to shit on for the lulz.

>he needs a useful idiot to explain it to him

>because retard
lol.

You might want to look into what a useful idiot is (or just think about the phrase a bit) before going on.

Hey anon. Read any good books lately?
>>
>>24727508
I actually did look it up earlier. Knowing what a useful idiot is, does not make that anon's criticism make any sense. He's all over the place.
For 1, A useful idiot is not necessarily a bad MC. To quit the book for that reason alone is rather petty.
2. Helward is not as retarded as he says. Helward, like a lot of people in life, is the product of the system he was born in. He's written fairly realistically.
The anon's extreme dislike of the book, and the reason he gave, hinted that he was very annoyed by the politics in the book. And he was attributing those politics to the author. The thing is, this can be read 1 of 2 ways. That the anon believes Helward was used to make his side look bad by being so dumb. Or he was used to make his side look good, but ended up sounding dumb by accident.
But more confusingly, Helward is actually a little flexible in the book. He's sympathetic to the other side, and adopts some of their ideals. So he's not exactly a black and white character.

At first I assumed that the anon was more of a conservative, upset by the liberal ideas in the book.(I think that's a fair assumption while browsing 4chan) Which, if you read the beginning of the book, it makes it sound as though the author is making arguments for the liberal side. But in the second half, there are actually strong arguments for the conservative side. And you realize the book is actually very balanced, showing the good and bad of both sides.

That's why I asked the anon if he finished reading the book. Because if he was the conservative that I assumed him to be, then he probably got triggered by the pro liberal arguments in the beginning.

But he said he read the whole thing. So then I asked him who the MC is a mouthpiece for. Thinking that he's going to name one of the factions in the book. But he says he's a mouthpiece for the author. Which doesn't answer anything. Because the author wrote good arguments for both sides. He could go either way himself.

So I asked him what message he thinks the author was trying to get across. And then he says "his own cleverness". Which truly makes no fucking sense. Cleverness in what way? What the fuck is he talking about?
>>
>>24727559
Then you did not understand what a useful idiot is. A useful idiot explains by having everything explained to him, he is the tool of the author who does not trust his writing or his reader. You have convinced me to never read Inverted World.

Why did you not just take that anons advice? Really makes it seem like you know he is right.
>>
>>24727571
Now see... Here's the answer I got when I looked it up.
>A useful idiot or useful fool is a pejorative description of a person, suggesting that the person thinks they are fighting for a cause without fully comprehending the consequences of their actions, and who does not realize they are being manipulated by the cause's leaders or by other political players.
> a naive or credulous person who can be manipulated or exploited to advance a cause or political agenda.
The character in the book is a useful idiot by that definition. Which I don't see a problem with.

The thing is: I also considered your definition as well. I thought of both interpretations. However, calling Helward a "patronizing mouthpiece" contradicts your definition. How can a character be someone who needs everything explained to him, but also be the patronizing mouthpiece. Those are two opposing aspects. He goes on to reinforce his contradiction by claiming Helward "explains everything to the reader." And the "author assume character is smarter than reader".

Do you get that no matter how you slice it, he doesn't make any sense? He's never explained himself properly.
