If the universe is a simulation, does our existence still have meaning?
>>24732455yes of course, you could be the cool, likable Sims character or the one nobody likes and the guy controlling it purposely makes his life harder.
>>24732455It wouldn’t have meaning even if it wasn’t a simulation
>>24732455
>>24732455Yes, you are either the one that is watched by the many or watched by the few. It's hard to say which one is better. You can be assigned more points for your actions but have a chance to get assigned more negative ones. I wouldn't bother trying to appease them, it's difficult to gauge the desires of entertainment for ones that you can't see.
I wouldn't waste any time entertaining the simulation idea. It's techbro amateur metaphysics.
>>24732884>assuming that if we are in fact a simulated universe, its purpose is for entertainmenteat some acai berries or something dude you're deficient in antioxidants or something
>>24732920Entertainment is quite broad. I like to think that some become quite attached to you. Giving you favour, a bit like a Twitch stream. It's a better thought than being left to our own devices or drifting through the void like in SOMA.
>>24732986That would mean the simulators are some sick, twisted fuckers. Child cancer, murder, starvation, Jewish people. How the hell is that entertainment? If that were the case a well-lived life full of happiness would be the ultimate fuck-you to our simulators.
>>24732998If you believe in free-will then a life full of happiness is more than possible. Maybe the entertainment is the abuse of free-will.
>>24732998That’s the bait they use to subject you to their trolling. The only way to thwart the demiurge is to lay flat.
>>24733008a simulation by definition would rule out the possibility of free will>>24733009gnosis? no, sis.
>>24733015>a simulation by definition would rule out the possibility of free willso i guess what the fuck are we even talking about then
>>24733015Simulationism is literally just Gnosticism but with sci-fi computer jargon though though.
>>24733027true, true
>>24733019>a simulation by definition would rule out the possibility of free willin that case any meaning would be contrived and ephemeral at best.
Can anyone even define "meaning"?
>>24732455Read book VII of the Republic. Or better yet, talk about a book, any book.
>>24733066for better or worse, this is the philosophy board. lit would improve greatly if they had their own dedicated space, but it is what it is
>>24732455>if the universe is a stimulation does our lives have any meating?
>>24733015I don't think a simulation means that you don't have free will because the ones making the simulation could give you free will. They would be no different from God.
>>24733110pre-defined variables =/= free will
>>24733119In that case what would be the point of the simulation, whoever made it know what is going to happen next. I feel like we're just talking about aspects of Religion at this point.
>>24733125study, data collection, scientific advancement,
>>24733125>whoever made it know what is going to happen next.that would assume a super-intelligence in the creators of the simulation. it could be sufficiently "random" enough so that they're unclear on what will occur, just as we are in our scientific simulations.
>>24733138which if that were the case, would sort of negate the need for a simulation in the first place, no? so one must assume they don't have ultimate prescience in terms of outcome. i just think that a simulation inherently rules out the possibility of free will as we understand it, but i'm a retard so who knows
>>24733138or maybe more precisely sufficiently complexalright a enough joe rogan pothead-tier what-iffery, im gonna go do something productive now.
>>24733148Thanks for contributing to our joe rogan pothead-tier what-iffery.
>>24732455Consider a paradox:If I tell you "Everything is meaningless" does that mean anything to you?
>>24733195Unrelated to the problem of telos
>>24732455In that case our meaning for life is to live well so we please the simulators
>>24733251What if they're trying to study the effects of drug use and degeneracy
>>24733259Then your life would have been guided that way and you wouldn't have had a chocie but to take drugs, all you need to do is continue fulfilling your role in life, like an actor on a stage.
>>24733276what if they're using it for nefarious purposes and the most ethical response we could have is suicide oh snap
>>24733294If you were to commit suicide it's have been planned by the simulators, there is literally nothing unexpected anyone can do inside a real simuation, this isn't the matrix. Our universe's simulators know every single action we're gonna take.
If the universe were a simulation, then argumentation would be impossible, for knowledge is required for argumentation, and knowledge requires a self which can't be within a simulation.
>>24733202Consider the paradox harder, until you apprehend my meaning.
>>24733336Why don't you explain yourself you fake ass useless vague homosexual
>>24733377Everything is meaningless. Thus this sentence and the first fail to convey meaning. But! You've understood all which I've had to say. Thus everything can't be meaningless. No?
>>24732455The word simulation means to deceive with actionshttps://johnsonsdictionaryonline.com/views/search.php?term=Simulation
