Who are the greatest French poets? Which are entry level and enjoyable vs very difficult?I want to try reading Mallarmé but I've heard he's extremely difficult and nearly impossible to appreciate if you aren't a native speaker/advanced FSL Ezra Pound and TS Eliot admired Jules Laforgue but I've never heard of him before
>>24733252Apollinaire is great, but I'm not sure about reading him in translation
>>24733309What's your favourite poem of his?
Oh I thought Apollinaire was mostly just a poet but he seems to have written a ton of prose as well
>>24733376il pleut, because it's kooky
Baudelaire is the best among them and a good place to start as you‘ll get a mix of Alexandrines and developing forms. Gautier works too if you‘re looking for somebody a bit more traditional in form.
