She moved to the United Kingdom and ended up needing a visa to stay. I'm not sure if she was sick at that time, but I think Lewis said they got married primarily for that reason and it ended up developing into more before her untimely death. It sounds like a put up with some shit too, considering he then adopted her two sons, one of whom was schizophrenic and iirc had random outbursts of violence and ended up in a mental hospital.
