Atheism and nihilism is correlated with the end of civilizational cycles when societies are decadent and the axial age, times when their old religion is no longer able to connect them to god given their new context. Read any actual history and you will see that every civilization had a phase of it and/or had it during the axial age. And pantheism is a term you can graft onto several different religions.
