Why do you read? Be honest.
>>
Same reason I poop, feels terrible if I go more than a day without doing it.
>>
For knowledge and the fun that can come with it.
>>
>>24738911
for fun
>>
>>24738911
I like learning about interesting shit and entertaining far-out ideas.
>>
>>24738911
Why are you here?
>>
>>24738930
To find out why other people read and what reading means to them. Thought I made that clear.

escapism

Yes, but what are you physically doing?
Typing, on a keyboard or on your phone, and reading
>>
>>24738911
A variety of stuff, usually going back and forth between fiction and non-fiction; a broad enough selection that I have difficulty explaining to people what I like. Last book I finished was The Power Broker by Robert Caro, a biography; currently reading the 100th anniversary anthology from Weird Tales. I also almost always have some Latin book I'm going through.
>>
I want to understand more about myself
also escapism, real life just sucks and humans are unironically pieces of shit ape egoist monkeys
>>
>>24738985
I need to justify being curious about people and their interests?
>>
I am genetic trash.
If I read, I feel less bad about having no purpose but to litter the planet with my presence.
If I can cram my head with knowledge, maybe I can be sophisticated trash.
>>
>>24738911
I only read for clout.
>>
well first of all it's a way to escape into a cool new world where I most likely wouldn't have gone to even if I had all the money in the world; secondly it's a way of communicating with people whom I might never meet, it's a way to understand the different ways of thinking, different points of view on things and ideas. Thirdly, it's just more healthy for the brain and your mind since you acquire new neural pathways and just in general feel more satiated than after other forms of media; fourthly, it makes you more empathetic which is a great skill to have in life. I'm sure there's plenty of other good things that reading brings for me but the ones that I've listed are the main ones I think
>>
>>24738911
not to contradict and confute; nor to believe and take for granted; nor to find talk and discourse; but to weigh and consider.
>>
>>24739059
So, affect?
>>
a) because I feel like it,
b) to steal ideas and lines I can use in life or my own writing
not always in that order.
>>
>>24738911
Sometimes becase I heard something mentioned and want to know more
Sometimes to get compliments on how smart I am
Sometimes because I hope it can help me leave something worthwhile behind when I die, since raising kids was never an option
Sometimes to entertain myself and keep the bad thoughts away, though books are considerably worse at it than other media
>>
Hoping one day 'it clicks' or I find God.
>>
>>24738911
All my other hobbies were ruined by talentless hacks.
>>
>>24738911
Honest?
Not by choice.
The pussy US Government refusing to enforce antitrust law forced me here. Corpo consolidation of all /v/ (MSFT, Embracer, Blizzard) and /tv/ (NFLX, HBO, Hulu) into the hands of like 3 companies has burned the originality/risk-taking out of every other form of entertainment, so now I'm stuck reading Huysmans.
>>
I find overcoming intellectual challenges one of the only things that feels really meaningful in life, and reading difficult literature is like an unfolding puzzle. Written stories are also better than filmed ones.
>>

Personal research reasons and interest in the subject matter
>>
>>24738911
To study and to jerk off.

Knowledge. New ideas/perspectives. Expand my imagination.
>>
>>24738911
I read for entertainment and for acquiring knowledge.

So that girls think I'm smart and fuck me
>>
>>24739493
reading is gay dude it gives chicks the ick
>>
>>24738911
Only thing I know is it's not for knowledge. Which is fucked up.
>>
>>24738911
To get more perspective as a writer.
>>
>>24738911
As a teen I started reading because I thought it would be better than wasting my time on vidya, although all I did was read slop. As I became a young adult I got more interested in literature through reading and wanted to read so I could be inspired as a writer as well as appreciate literature as an artform. Now I read because I just like literature and it's one of the only hobbies I have that allows me to calm my brain down and be antisocial.
>>
>>24738911
To pass time. I enjoy it. The way dopamine is released in relation to the activity is also less addict like and hedonistic. I can't just shut off my brain I have to engage with it and it requires something of me.. which gives me the illusion of accomplishing something which I can't get out of watching something.. and games well they are just repetetive.. at least with books I've not gotten to the point yet where everything feels the same.

If pic implies doing it to impress girls, then you are a fag.. Why you don't get girls is most likely because you are insecure enough to not be authentic and try to con them into liking you... But really even if you succeed the mask will slip eventually and you'll be alone again.

To squeeze every ounce of out of life.
>>
I'm looking for an answer. No other medium allows you to consult the result of millennia of lives spent searching for an answer and its question.
I don't think real life makes sense and I don't want to go on pretending that it doesn't have to.

I work 60 hours a week in construction.... I have like 250+ Films & God knows how many records.... So reading is just a nice way to actively consume art.... Reading, Rocks

Habit, probably. It's an addiction atp

For the past one to two years I've become increasingly sustained by the notion that reading great works will transform me from a slow-witted and anxious person into a magnetic, amicable, intelligent man, through simple osmosis rather than assiduous devotion to the arguments of the author. Fundamentally I believe that simply being around genius is enough to allow my instincts to carry me to where I want to go in life. So I read a lot of western canon fiction, just soaking in these great artistic intellects to the extent that I naturally can.

I can hear you typing. You are thinking that I read out of a pathetic feeling of desperation and fear. I can't deny that that is true. But it is the same fear as the bodybuilder who reasonably worries that his physique will atrophy away if he doesn't continue his training regimen. When fear pushes you toward good ends, then it's not a bad thing at all. When reading helps get you laid, isn't that reason enough?

For entertainment generally speaking. If the story isn't thoroughly interesting or a page turner I WILL abandon it. This includes things like history AND philosophy.

It must be at the very least INTERESTING.

ok cool :3

No one else I know does so it makes me feel superior to them
