Against the Day by Thommy Pynchy

Contenders in English are KJV Bible, Shakespeare and Chaucer.

??? What other English books have at once as much literary perfection and variety of subject matter as the KJV Bible, Shakespeare and Chaucer? Milton or Joyce are perhaps the only other contenders.

Real answer: the fattest collection of short stories I could find

Fake answer for ragebait and clicks: The Bible
>>
>>24738983
The collected short stories of W. Somerset Maugham.

It's one of the few books i can return to again and again and still enjoy.
>>
>>24739187
The bible is a fat collection of short stories though?
>>
>>24739222
It's not? It's pretty short, the gosepl of mark is literally 11 pages if you print it on normal sized paper. OT is somewhat longer but that's because it includes a lot of poetry that takes a long time to get to the point (because it's poetry) and repeated information, like the story of david or the world creation myth being repeated twice. Even the gospels palgiarise each other and repeat the same lines verbatim.

And a lot of the NT isn't even narrative, but personal correspondence.

I don't know why the Bible would make anyone rage.
>>
>>24739310
it's a retarded answer and refusing to engage with the thread properly for cheap virtue signaling is what is rage inducing

>one month
Bro I've been a shutin living alone for 15 years
But i guess I'll get the 1977 loeb edition of metamorphoses, with the side by side english+latin so i can study.

I got to spend a month at Uncle Sam's summer camp, part of the deal to get my record expunged and go back to a real white collar job. Ended up getting to spend 2 weeks of it in solitary after a disagreement with my (12 time) pedo celly about him being a pedo.:) (but mostly just him shitting on the floor and leaving it there.) The selection was middle school tier as you might expect but I did enjoy it more than sitting around at a table and discussing "respect" and "disrespect" and who was giving these things to who and who was not giving it to those who it was due... constantly... for 14 hours a day. I read 92 in the Shade, one of the early Bond novels, some noir detective novel, The Feast of the Goat, a Vonnegut novel (he's a shitty knock off Twain I can't remember which it was they blend together), In praise of shadows (random that that was in there), and the Bros Karam. Also did a lot of walking in circles, surprisingly hard habit to break after the fact.

It's not nearly as bad as they say if you're an educated person, even when you first get in and they don't allow a book. Does drive 65 IQs who don't spend any time in their head absolutely batshit though. I think beatings would be more humane. Lots and lots of screaming and wailing - you would think a person would eventually get tired out after a few hours but you would be surprised. After the first day though your brain learns to tone it out. I could unironically read Schope with someone using a jackhammer right next to me no problem now.
>>
Some massive anthology of philosophy if that's not cheating
>>
>>24739311
It's a very good answer entirely apart from ideological considerations. The KJV Bible is one of the grandest products of English literature and it's absolutely packed full of diverse contents which cannot be exhausted in a month's time. I think you're just doing exactly what you're accusing others of doing, virtue signaling your beliefs.
>look at me! i hate the bible! i hate religion!
No one gives a shit, this is a thread about literature.
>>
>>24739311
Checked. Dubs of falsity and faghood. As the other anon pointed it out it is one of the best contenders for a book that would keep you engaged for such a long period of time. I am not a religious man at this point in my life but consider, (as you should also if you take literature seriously) the Bible to be one of the greatest works of human history. It is the foundation for most of western thought and literature and cannot be ignored for reasoning that is nothing more than weak muh atheism.

Nigga, the Bible is literally 1500 pages with extremely tiny font.
>>
>>24738983
My iPad. Tell the guards there's only one book on there.
There's about 500 and I could plow through a few. Let's go. What's on the menu?
>>
>>24739333
This would be my second pick
>>
>>24738983
My diary desu because i would finally have the time to write.
>>

>>24739378
The reason the bible is a terrible answer is simply because it's very short for an anthology. To say you'd pick it got a 15 year stay is just refusing to give a proper answer, you could read it in 1 sitting if you wanted to, even if you're a very slow reader I don't have a clue how you wouldn't have finished by the end of day 3. Saying "the bible" is just refusing to engage with the thread for cheap virtue signaling about your chosen faith.

>1500 pages with extremely tiny font.
Maybe if the pages themselved are small themselves.
>>
>>24740847
>>24740846
To be honest, you're overstating it a bit, if you don't know which parts to skip you definitely won't do it in 1 day. I do agree though that if you do nothing but read and sleep (eat and whatever too) it wouldn't take you longer than s couple of days to get through it, 3 would also be my pick but 5 is the absolute maximum I'd pick for a really slow reader

Maybe if you're using a shit translation you could make it longer because you need to scratch your head at bizarre word choices or something

The KJV is a translation and as such cannot be called "English literature" anymore than a translation of the Odyssey
>>
>>24738983
Something long that I haven't read but want to.
>>
>>24741521
Absolutely philistinish opinion. Only someone with no understanding of the process of translation and very little knowledge of English literature could think such a thing. Chapman's and Pope's Homer are extremely important works of English literature.
>>

Incredible shitpost my man
>>
>>24738983
If bringing an Anthology isn't cheating then it would be The Complete Works of Plato, if it is cheating then it would probably be Lucretius De rerum natura untranslated or Loeb volume.
>>
>>24738983
that's an awful long time
>>
>>24740888
Summa Theologica by Thoma Aquinas

I mean it's shit but it's long enough

Personally I'd pick some really dense and complete book about engineering or something

If anthologies/collections of books are cheating (this excludes the bible btw) thenn war and peace
