>>24741864Not quite the time period you are asking for but Dogs of War was a great insight into the world of western mercenaries in Africa during the cold war. The author was even investigated by British intelligence because they thought he was preparing to start an actual coup in Guinea while he was doing research for the book

>>24741864not many good books english books dealing with the Somali Civil war, let alone during those years. most books are very general in focus or are mass produced american "battlefield report/retelling" slop to capitalise on the forever wank for black hawk down. here are some books i think are decent[Abdi, Basha Ahmed 2019]Somalia... Where to?...good general book about somali history though mostly focuses in from post ww2 to the present. book isnt soley dealing with history as its arguing for somali unity as a solution to current balkanisation of the somali regions. author has written hundreds of pieces about somalia in various journals and papers, had to flee somalia after writing a critial piece about Siad Barre back in the mid 70s.main pros>extremely readable, written a bullet point-ish fashion and allows for jumping in anywhere>cites sources wellcons>not sure if this book is available outside the US>third half is mostly dedicated to modern day somali/somaliland politics>book assumes reader is muslim. may need to read about islam more generally to get stuff>50% of sources are in arabic or somali[Kapteijns, Lidwien 2013] Clan Cleansing in Somaliamain book focused on the civil war. specifically the Isaaq Genocide which is scarescly ever actually discussed. pros are>acedemic book that is trusted and relied on by many scholars>alright sourcing>pretty much the only book about the Isaaq genocidecons is>pretty much the only book about the isaaq genocide>author is extremely onions, uncritically supports any sources critical of the SNM and is a typical liberal elite.>really depressing to read>can be pretty dull at points[Trunji, Mohamed 2019] Somalia The Untold History - 1941-1969largest book here, also written 2019. author is unfortunetly a bitch who worked for literally every gov since decolonsation, including the UN. main pros are>600+ pages>extremely well sourced, acedmic book>fairly neutral even when the author is biasedcons>author is a piece of shit who has exclusive reputable sources and has not published them>can be dull read, very acedemic>600+ pages>many sources are in italian, french, arabic, somali>ends at the military coup, which is vital for understanding the civil war but book is not about itonly really recommened if you want real deep info about somaliahope these help at all!

>>24741864maybe not exactly what you want but shake hands with the devil by romeo dallaire was pretty good. some interesting theories from him (he led the UN peacekeeping mission) on both sides knowledge and working behind the UN's back
Scholastique Mukasonga and Avik Jain Chatlani have more subtle references in their work. Romeo Dallaire is more straightforward.
Shake hands with the devil by Romeo Dallairre.
