Read it twice -- I think it's his greatest work. It goes in really surprising directions, it has some truly creepy and gruesome passages, and it combines the best of exciting nautical adventure with weird high-concept horror. Just try to stick with it because the first section can get pretty dull but it's totally worth it.
He was a good writer but some of his ideas in this one were pants on head retarded. True nobody had reached the North Pole when he wrote it but his theory that it starts warming up again once you pass the cold part and get closer to the Pole was pretty fucking stupid
This story is pretty scary
