It sure seems like nobody gives a single fuck about this guy anymore. He's not perceived as some sort of grand mystical polymath who was once blessed with transcendental wisdom and genius ; he's just some painter now. Nobody even really reads or talks about his writings. He used to hailed in the same way that normalfags talk about William Blake in current year. But you just have to accept him as another commodity in the grand mosaic of everyday life.
What does this all mean? That there's really no reason to peruse these kinds of geniuses' minds anymore? Was the obsession with the Italian Renaissance painters just a 'sham' pushed by art historians and the like to justify their positions and their degrees?

In our cynical, materialist world, inventions need to be economical, mass production friendly, practical. Most of his genius ideas had no application in the real world. They were just trippy prototypes with no pragmatic value.

So, in other words, he really wasn't much of a ''''genius''''

Sure. What's your point?

What practical purpose does it serve you to hold any belief as to whether the earth is round or not?

the da vinci code unironically killed his legacy

Reverence for artists is replaced by:
>Errm didnt u know all le old masters used camera obscura/lucida for tracing??
Which is mostly bs but many people prefer easy explanations of mindblowing skills.

>da Vinci was hyped during era of engineers, but objectively there were more impressive renaissance polymaths. Martin Luther was a greater renaissance man than da Vinci.
t. Barzun

Let's consider OP's and Barzun's opinions true for a moment. It would follow that the era of engineers is ending and we will hype another renaissance man.

Last time I checked, people still want to see the Mona Lisa in the Louvre Museum.
