Do you genuinely enjoy reading or are you just pretending to be well read? Be honest
I don't talk to a single irl person about books or reading so if I was pretending it would be to impress the retarded faggots on this board which I can assure you I am not.
Don't pretend to be well read. Love me pulps. Always have.
i admit i merely pretend, i have read the synopses of some classics on wikipedia to have the basic deets but otherwise i am a poser. not ashamed to admit it anonymously, but in real life i think i might just die if i ever get outed. the closest i ever got was when i claimed to be a big fan of the "bronte sisters" but i didnt know how to pronounce their name, and a coworker politely corrected me. this was years ago and i still have a mini panic attack whenever i remember it. this is why whenever the subject of literature comes up, i will always try to pivot towards philosophy, because there's a much lower chance of a normalfag being familiar with the works i claim to have read. the day i ever encounter an actual whitehead fag in real life is the day i get folded like a lawnchair
>>24747991You're playing a dangerous game, imposter-kun.
>>24747970I like reading and have not read every book in existence. Pretty incredible tech. Pretty stupid thread.
>>24747970I actively pretend I don’t read as much as I do because I’m surrounded by people who complain about having to read in uni. Like what the fuck did you think it was going to be about? Anyway telling them what I actually read would clock me as a weirdo freak so I just pretend to watch tv instead.
>>24747970I don’t enjoy anything that I do
>>24748004This is your one unique chance to stomp them down as their superior and you refuse to take it for fear of being judged by these vermin, these intellectual midgets?
bar's that low huh lmao
>>24747970I don‘t enjoy it but I unenjoy it less than everything else in my life
One time I had a long conversation with a boomer Uber driver about whether or not Orwell or Huxley was more prescient in their views, after never having read either, basing everything on a meme I saw here.Afterwards he praised me for being so well-read and said it made him feel good to know that the younger generation still had readers. I don't even have the attention span to read books and might listen to a few audiobooks per year.
>>24747970I only read blood meridian because of this board and it was not enjoyable, if anybody asked in real life I would pretend I hadn’t read it just to avoid talking about it or being associated with it.I do enjoy reading fantasy books though since they capture the feeling better than any video game or movie can.
>>24747970Basically none of my friends or any girl I meet likes to read. Why the fuck would anyone larp at such an unpopular hobby?
>>24748155For upvotes on lit you fucking retard
>>24747970Yeah, keeps me busy and learning more
>>24748110That's funny. I enjoyed Blood Meridian because it was like reading a fantasy but with all the cringe shit like democratic monarchies, female knights, and magic spells cut out.
>>24747970it's incredibly isolating to pursue intellectual hobbies and I have never once in my life gotten any kind of praise or (positive) attention because of mine
I can be both, desu
>>24748188I think you might be more interested in historical fiction than fantasy
>>24747970Both.I read cover to cover a lot of books that actually interest me, but for the sake of fun Internet trolling and argumentation, I sometimes pretend to have read books that I haven't.
>>24747991I can't tell whether you're telling the truth or brilliantly poisoning the well for /lit/fags :)
>>24747970>I've read 1984, the Hobbit an d Handmaids Ta me>I've been meaning to read Ulysses for agesI like reading and I'm not trying to impress anyone (not am I pretending I'm well read)>>24748006We enjoy( (you), big sexy
>>24748188Fantasy without magic becomes an entirely different genre.
>>24748195>took a philosophy class in university about 20 years ago>some girl in my group asked if I could help her, as I was smart (and could apparently explain Socratese so she could understand) >kicking myself for at least not asking her out for coffee or hanging out in a non-school setting
>>24748341Socrates not SocrateseI r smrt
I used to just read synopsis and name drop authors and quote books I hadn't read to seem deep when I was a teenager. In my 20s I began to actually read more than one book a year. I still struggle to read consistently. I'll have a couple of months where I read 50-100 pages a day and then I won't touch a book again for six months.
>>24747970Used to tell nerdy girls I like to read tooAnd that was true at some point. But recently realized that I haven't touched a book in like two years. I just don't really have the time, and every book I want to read can be found as a free audiobook. Though in theory I still like books and reading.
Why can't these people just stop the pretending admit their love for tiktok slop and fuck each other
>>24747970I enjoy reading very much but I don't give a shit about being generally well read. I want to be well read in the specific niche I picked.
>>24748021jajajajaja
>>24747970I go through bouts. I dont consistently like reading but I will get inspired every now and then and read a norse saga, or some 1700's philosophers publication, or some 1950's classic sci-fi.I dont just crack open a book because im bored, but because something has caught my attention and the inspiration hit.
>>24748628And just as examples for each>Norse sagavolsunga>1700s philosopher (actually was 1600s most recently)Pascal's pansees>1950's sci-fidying earth
>>24747970I give hints of being well read and getting the gist of the grander picture of classic literature but immediately shut it down by playing the retard card and busting jokes and being more concerned with asking questions. It's just less bothersome. I get myself into those kinds of issues by chiming in if somebody is talking about lit-related subjects, because I genuinely enjoy the conversations, but I rarely ever bring it up myself. Truth be told I kind of don't really care about the canon or the classics, I just prefer reading whatever and not having to directly externalize it to anybody.
>>24748020It’s the thing about playing chess with a chicken that tips your pieces over and shits on the board. Having to convince these people reading for fun is even laudable is the first hurdle. I have to stop them from citing ChatGPT in group work and this is one of the programs with the highest bar to entry so theoretically they’re all smart. Help me.
>>24748341>>24748344Socrates? More like Socratease, amirite??
>>24748914Unfortunately with the degradation of the university, you'll find most of the actually smart people in the master's portion if you're lucky, and doctoral if unlucky. I was fortunate to study something that required very little group work, and so had to suffer much less idiocy (except my own.) Good luck.
>>24747970I just want (You's) to be honest.
>>24748155I have been involved in two long term relationships because I had one of those little orange Penguin editions in my pocket
>Do you genuinely enjoy readinglol, of course not, silly OP
>>24747970i used to genuinely enjoy reading and then the internet murdered my attention span and now i'm miserable.
>>24748188you should read salammbo by flaubert
>>24748951salambro who?
>>24747970I enjoy reading but I am a bit of a pseud.
>>24747970>Do you genuinely enjoy reading or are you just pretending to be well read? Be honestDo you mean enjoi or enjoy.I genuinely enjoi reading.I do not enjoy reading.I do it because I must. Here's my fist prepare your anus.
>>24747970>The Odyssey >Emily Wilson version FUCK. FUCK.
>>24747970I enjoy reading, I don't pretend to be well read.
>>24747970I can't even tell which are the books on the top row other than the alchemist, otherwise of the listed ones I've only ever read Ulysses and Odyssey, if that is what's the rightmost book on the bottom. Of the other books, I do not pretend to have read them, in fact, I tend to exude obnoxious smug superiority if they ever get brought up in a conversation and I get the chance to express my disinterest in them. Anyways, while I enjoy reading, I'm pretty inconsistent and bad at it, so I naturally also act as a pseud pretending to have read a lot more than I have.
>>24747970At first I was pretending to impress my parents/teachers then I was pretending to impress myself then I was pretending to impress a girl. Now that i actually have a mind of my own I've come to enjoy reading and stopped forcing myself to finish uninteresting books.
>>24747970>Do you genuinely enjoy readingWhy else would I do it. Having other interest would be more convenient so why pretend.
>>24747970How retarded do you have to be to pretend you've read Paulo Coelho and Margaret Atwood?
>>24750526woman retarded
>>24747970I'm probably the only person in my work / social life who readsand I just read sffg slop to kill time at workeven if I was well read it wouldn't impress anyone
I enjoy it. But if I'm under significant stress I can't really focus on it. Things in my life have to be going good for me to bother with it. Lately I've been a mess. So I can't really concentrate. IDK. I spiraled out earlier this Summer. I can't tell if I was fucked with on purpose of it was because of me. Maybe a bit of both.
