Can you still use a Kindle without ever going online and signing in? Just buy it, keep it offline from day one, and transfer books. Seeing how they're cracking down on offline downloads, I wonder if this is next before I buy one. Also, general e-reader thread.
>>24751947Still werksIf stop werking jailbreaks will probably commence
>>24751952>Still werksOn the latest model?
>>24751947People are so gay about kindles. I have one and haven’t bought a single book. I pirate them and email them to my kindle and read them. That’s it. I don’t worry about jail breaking or hacking or Amazon deleting shit (they don’t ).
>>24751947Cracking down? WTF are you talking about? I just use the send to kindle for my pirated books no issues.
You don't have to buy a Kindle if you're too retarded to figure that stuff out anon.
>>24751968They stopped allowing offline downloads from the Kindle Store to prevent people from cracking their books.>>24751969I already have a jailbroken Kindle, I'm looking to buy a new for someone else. I can "figure it out" by buying one and potentially wasting my money, or have someone with a new model just tell me their experience with it.
>>24751947Can you still use a Kindle without ever going online and signing in?Yes>They're cracking down on offline downloadsThey are disabling the 'Download & Transfer via USB' but I think it only applies to books downloaded from their store. I can still download books from Libgen and transfer them through a USB.
>>24751973>YesI'll assume you're talking about the latest model, since you're the second person to say yes without elaborating. Okay.
>>24751970Well, is the person buying from the Kindle store or 'borrowing' them from the high sea libraries? If it's the former, they will need to connect it to the internet most likely. You should ask this on Reddit desu, most people here aren't law abiding citizens
>>24751984They're going to be pirating books, so the "Download & Transfer via USB' feature isn't relevant to me.
>>24751995They can still use it without ever signing in then
bought a kobo a few year ago to avoid the potential of that, but the power button fell off recently. I need to use a key to turn it on and off now
Fell for the kobo meme and bought me a kobo clara bw dead pixels in the middle of the screen after a week of reading manga
>>24751973Is it not possible to get the .azw file (or whatever is the latest file format) anymore? How about buying it on amazon, then transfering it to kindle over the internet and then connecting pc to the kindle with a cable and copying file (from kindle)?
>>24752019>>24752055I got one of these as a gift—the regional German variant which is branded differently but should be the same hardware—half a decade ago and surprisingly it is still going strong. I did read a lot of manga on it as well.
>>24751947Yes, but if you ever get back on wifi, all your books get deleted, so just keep it on airplane mode and you should be good
>>24751947Kobos are just the superior ereader choice. I've gotten so much mileage from my kobo and libgen that it's unreal. Never setting foot in a bookshop again>>24752055I think that most people don't get that issue. Pretty sure there's warranty if it breaks so soon after purchase, no?
>>24752059There are all files to .AZW3 converters online, I use Cloudconvert dot com
>>24751947love my ereader, simple as. I find I read far more now with it
>>24752059>>24751973You can just download epub files and use the Send To Kindle tool https://www.amazon.com/sendtokindle
>>24751947While yes with each gen and firmware update they lock it down more and more, you can sideload non Amazon bought books and put it in airplane mode. But you cannot make or organise collections without doing it on the kindle, not though Calibre. Which if you have a large amount is a pain. Organising by series is also kind of shit.Few days ago they updated them so it locks down removing DRM even more with a secret key. My understanding is it can now see books that have had Amazon drm removed. You have to put it online when you first set it up, jailbreaking(winterbreak) only works once the kindle is registered. But when you do it updates, so you need to stop it from doing that by filling it up. It's all a pain in the ass.Buying one now runs the risk of getting one with newer firmware, you cannot role it back to an older one without it first being jailbroken. If you can find one save yourself the pain and just buy a Kobo Libra 2, everything works in Calibre, sideloading is great.
>>24751947Yes. Download Calibre, use it to convert epubs to either azw3 or mobi, and then transfer. It's very easy to do. Hell, I'm about to transfer some right now.
>>24752019>>24752055kobo slander.my secondhand one i bought for $70 works fine two years in and has saved me presumably hundreds in book costs.the only part that sucks is having to use a email to set it up.
>>24751954>I pirate them and email them to my kindle and read themAre you aware that your pirated books go through remote Amazon server for processing? Have fun being on feds list for reading Minecraft book by that austrian painter.
>>24751953Sure, but you have to plug it directly into your computer to transfer the files. But yeah you don’t need to register it, that’s optional. It does allow you send to kindle over wi-fi
>>24752234Not without registering it
Kindle user here. It makes no sense to use it offline only, unless you just want to make an useless statement. Keeping it synced allows you to export highlights, read them on the mobile app etc
I have a kobo aura one I've used for years and will keep using. I don't know why they don't have a compact 8 inch reader now though, all the ones now are so tiny.
>>24752234I want to download the actual books that I bought on amazon, basically have a local copy
>>24752479>pirated books go through remote Amazon server for processingNot if you use Calibre for file transfer via USB.
I was nervous getting a new one with how much people complain about kindle locking down, but its literally never been easier to pirate books because you can just transfer epubs now without even having to convert them yourself to kindles shitty formats>>24751970what the fuck does offline download even mean lol
>>24754521>you can just transfer epubs now without even having to convert them yourself to kindles shitty formatshttps://standardebooks.org/help/how-to-use-our-ebooks#kindle-faq>I heard that Kindles support epubs now. Is that true?>No, Kindle devices still do not natively support epub files.>It’s true that Amazon’s Send to Kindle feature now accepts epubs. But, when you use the Send to Kindle feature to send an epub to your Kindle device, Amazon actually converts the epub file to an Amazon format before delivering it to your device.>It’s still not possible to use a USB cable to transfer an epub file to your Kindle device.
>>24752055>e-ink>pixels
I was thinking about getting an e-ink device, but my 10yo Kindle is fine, really. Maybe when it breaks.
I need a cheapo 7" e-reader with backlight, but it has to be new. Pocketbook Verse would be a good choice ?
>>24754676why do you care though?
